Job Summary:
Under general supervision, the Licensed Vocational Nurse provides health services to students with specialized physical health care needs under the guidelines provided by the student's doctor and/or the school nurse; provides specialized support services in various Pre-K - Adult, emotionally disturbed, autistic, behavioral, full inclusion or assistive technology special education settings; performs related work as required.
Essential Job Functions:
Provides
the following medical procedures including, but not limited to catheterization, NG tube feeding, changing tracheotomy tubes and ties, machine suctioning, colostomy/ileostomy, gastrostomy feeding, mechanical ventilation, nasal cannula, oxygen supplementation and syringe suctioning. Performs
necessary procedures for diabetic students. Assists
in the toileting of students, frequently involving lifting and cleaning of students, diapering, and the care of devices such as feeding tubes, catheters, urinary and colostomy bags; supervises teenage students in the use of sanitary supplies. Dispenses
medication; records medication and treatment given as prescribed by the physician. Assists
in the loading and unloading of special needs students from buses and in the transferring of students to and from classrooms and events. Maintains
student health and emergency medical records. Supervises
special needs students in snack and lunch activities and outdoor/campus activities. Assists
special need students in learning or using special equipment, in the development and maintenance of appropriate social behaviors, modeling gross motor skills and independent mobility, and in instructional activities. Communicates
regularly with other members of the instructional team regarding daily performance of students. Performs
a variety of clerical and recordkeeping activities (e.g., charting student progress, maintaining records and preparing reports). Assists
in teaching students' self-feeding and grooming skills.
Other Job Functions:
Administers
first aid and provides medical assistance. Assists
other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. Assists
by riding school bus with student to and from school. Assists
with community based instruction. Possibility
of travel/reassignment from location to location. Participates
in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
Work cooperatively with students, teachers, nurses and others; understand and follow oral and written instructions; respond effectively to emergencies; operate equipment in a safe and proper manner; maintain accurate records; speak and write effectively; understand health policies and procedures; ensures student's rights to confidentiality and privacy; able to work under minimal supervision; supervise students; able to lift non-ambulatory students, lift and move adaptive equipment; ability to demonstrate gross motor activities, climb in and out of cars, vans, and buses and to maneuver students into and out of vehicles.
Physical Requirements:
The Office of Classified Personnel Services embraces the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The requirements of the position are maintained in the Personnel Department; and, individuals shall be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
Education Required:
High School graduate or equivalent and one (1) year experience in a related field; Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) required; valid CPR and first Aid Certificate and ability to maintain certification.
Licenses, Certifications and Testing Required: Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) required. Valid California Driver's License Current First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate. Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance. Tuberculosis clearance.
