Job Description
Accomack County is currently seeking applications for a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator in the Department of Public Works. The position’s primary responsibility is to operate a variety of equipment related to waste management at the County’s transfer station and landfill. Employees in this classification perform skilled and manual work. The position is responsible for operating heavy equipment (e.g. loaders, excavators, and dozers), portable power equipment, and sometimes hand tools. Operators ensure the safe and efficient use of equipment, performing pre-operation inspections, monitoring equipment condition, and performing minor maintenance or repairs.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) to two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving the operation of heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Preferred qualification: possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.
Satisfactory completion of a background check, medical exam including drug screening, and DMV records checks are required prior to employment. DMV records check will be performed annually thereafter. The job description can be found here.
