City of Fort Madison Employment Opportunities

The Civil Service Commission of the City of Fort Madison, Iowa, will be conducting examinations for a Firefighter Candidate List on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Application packets are available by contacting the Fort Madison City Clerk at (319) 372-7700, ext. 206 or by email at cityclerk@fortmadison-ia.com. Application packets can also be picked up at Fort Madison City Hall, 811 Avenue E, Fort Madison, Iowa.

The minimum qualifications to test are:

• Obtain a High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Be between the ages of 18 and 64
• Literate in the English language
• Be of good moral character

The deadline to submit applications is 4:30 P.M. on Friday, May 9, 2025.

The Fort Madison Civil Commission Examination consists of both written and physical agility tests. The tests will be scored using a point system. Fifty percent (50%) of the total points possible will be allotted to the written portion, while the remaining fifty percent (50%) of the total points possible will be allotted to the physical agility portion of the examination.

The written portion of the examination will start promptly at 8:00 A.M. on the date contained in the public notice requesting applications. The physical agility portion of the examination will start at 11:00 A.M. on the same date. In the event of inclement weather on the testing date, the Fort Madison Civil Service Commission reserves the right to postpone the physical agility portion of the examination to another date.

Any applicant failing the written or any portion of the physical agility test will be disqualified from consideration for the position.

Applicants wishing to test for the position of Firefighter on the Fort Madison Fire Department shall not be discriminated against on the basis of height, weight, sex, or race in determining the physical or mental ability of the applicant.
