The Military and Veterans’ Rights Bureau educates veterans as to their rights and benefits, provides written materials to assist veterans in understanding their rights on specific issues, and provides outreach to the veteran community by attending events and speaking on veterans' rights, benefits, and other issues such as consumer fraud and military employment.The Bureau also investigates:Violations of laws affecting Illinois veterans and service members to enforce such laws or to make referrals to the proper agency;Violations of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act and related provisions in conjunction with the Consumer Fraud Bureau;Violations of the Illinois Service Member Employment & Reemployment Rights Act;Violations of the Military Veterans Assistance Act;Evaluations and granting of State Charter for Veteran Service Organizations under the State Charter Act;Violations of other laws as applicable.The next Assistant Attorney General in Military and Veterans Rights should be a veteran or have ties sufficient to understand military language, culture, and terminology. The attorney’s primary focus will be on consumer issues that impact the military community with an emphasis on Section 2YYY of the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act. A strong desire to learn and aggressively pursue the interests of Illinois veterans is required. The attorney must also be able to work with directors of other government agencies, provide and be receptive to feedback, interact well with other supervisors and the Administration, and be involved in the day-to-day operations of the Bureau.
