Establishes needs for specimens and space requirements, laboratory layout and maintenance, renovation, staffing, equipment, and supplies. The position requires personnel management responsibilities including the selection, duty assignment, career development, and evaluation of the research laboratory staff.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Administrative & Supervisory ResponsibilitiesResponsible for effective personnel management including new hire selection, training, directing, mentoring. Conducts annual employee performance evaluations.Monitors productivity and performance to identify and evaluate program/department strengths and training opportunities in relation to operational effectiveness.Provides safety training to new members of the laboratory including visiting scholars. Ensures that all laboratory users are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements. Coordinates and shares effective experimental protocols with other lab users.Performs all administrative duties associated with running the laboratory including timesheet maintenance, ordering and receipt of supplies, budget projections, etc.Laboratory Maintenance & Daily OperationsSupervises and directs research staff including scheduling daily assignments, floating personnel to other areas to manage workflow or peak loads; Provides guidance in the development of laboratory technical skills.Works with the Principal Investigator (PI) to develop lab policies and ensure they are carried out. Administers, coordinates and supports the technical activities and infrastructure related to the operation of the laboratory.Maintains study work instructions for all incoming studies and helps to train new staff on all protocols.Performs bench work for the PIs of the Core, from planning of experiments to data analysis as needed. This includes, but is not limited to, phlebotomy, blood processing, cell preparation, RNA/DNA extractions, flow cytometry, etc.Manages existing organization systems to catalog and store laboratory-generated reagents such as plasmids, cell lines, and antibodies. Assesses current laboratory kits and reagents. Streamlines material use between lab members.Regularly evaluates all aspects of the laboratory's program for compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. Assists PIs in managing space for equipment/supplies. Maintains, and troubleshoots minor problems with lab equipment, including centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, water baths, thermal cyclers, autoclave, spectrophotometers, Luminex, fluorescent microscope, etc. Contacts proper vendor or department for repair.Research CoordinationLiaisons with Institutional Review Board (IRB) to facilitate approval of projects, ongoing documentation, and reporting. Develops proposals for future NIH funding.Assists with new grant proposal development, and preparation of research reports and presentations.Assists Investigators with manuscript and presentation preparation and research.Participates in staff meetings/initiatives including appropriate quality improvement and education activities, or if unable to attend non-mandatory activities, accepts responsibility to review meeting minutes and becomes knowledgeable of issues discussed.General DutiesConforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the hospital's goals and mission.Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.Performs other responsibilities as assigned or as needed.JOB REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION:Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Science or in a field related to the research or study. Masters degree preferred.EXPERIENCE:Must have 5+ years experience in a laboratory environment with managerial experience. (Experience may be offset for candidates with a Masters degree in a biological science or in a field related to the research/study).KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:Extensive tissue culture and molecular biology techniques and the ability to learn campus wide operations is required.A thorough theoretical understanding and practical experience in basic microbiology and isolation techniques is required.Proficient in verbal and written English and Mathematics pertinent to the duties of this position and situations encountered in the laboratory.Ability to make decisions regarding daily laboratory operations and to address unusual situations that arise within the facilities.Proficient computer skills, including data entry and use of spreadsheet and/or database.
