Summary:

Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing financial reports, performing

account reconciliations, maintaining the general ledger, and other accounting duties. The Senior Accountant is responsible for specific business units including the preparation of divisional financial results within the SJC Media Group. This position also provides assistance and training to Shared Service Accounting Analysts while supporting the Controller and Senior Management.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting
  • Preparation and review of divisional monthly financial statements ensuring accuracy of expenses and revenue recognition for multiple business units within SJC Media. Currently responsible for Assembly Digital, Chatelaine, Today's Parent, Fashion and Weddingbells.
  • Evaluation of financial performance by analyzing monthly financial statements, accruing for revenues and costs, intersecting with business operations team members as required.
  • Monthly review of purchase order reports to ensure that all costs have been accrued based on PO's.
  • Downloads dashboard revenue reports for Assembly revenue partners on a monthly basis and records the revenues in Netsuite. Resolves any report discrepancies with the Assembly AdOps team
  • Reviews all expenses for the Assembly Group including recording AMEX charges to correct cost area based on information provided by operations.
  • Monthly financial cashflow report to support Google payment required by senior management.
  • Records deposits received for revenues not billed through the A/R system including licensing and e-commerice agreements and other miscellaneous invoices.
  • Prepares monthly circulation cash report for senior management.
  • Records revenues and expenses for Media Commerce Studios (peeka.ca).


General Ledger Maintenance
  • Monthly balance sheet reconciliations for Media, Heritage, Toronto Life, Macleans and Assembly.
  • Reviews deferred costs and creates monthly prepaid expense amortization in Netsuite to recognize costs in the correct financial period based on publication/project dates.
  • Reviews capital assets/depreciation entries and prepares continuity schedules and capital asset report by project for all media subsidiaries.
  • Accrued liabilities reconciliation and other payables across multiple business units.
  • Reviews multiple bank reconciliations prepared by the Accounting Analyst for all subsidiaries within shared services (Content, Media, Toronto Life, Heritage, Macleans, Assembly, Ink Truck).
  • Reviews intercompany transactions and resolves any discrepancies with Accounting Analyst
  • Reviews undeposited funds account on a monthly basis to ensure entries are cleared and investigates any outstanding balances.


Compliance and Other Accounting Duties
  • Reviews commodity tax returns prepared by the Accounting Analyst for all legal entities.
  • Responsible for online filing of commodity taxes by the last day of the month.
  • Assists with providing supporting documentation for audits and other compliance reporting.
  • Supports accounts payable with stop payments on cheques, expense coding and other requests.
  • Processes Wires and EFT payments in BMO for SJC Media Group, monitors bank for returned wires that need to be resubmitted.
  • Advises external circulation fulfilment house of any returned subscription payments.
  • Assists Controller and Senior Management with special projects as required.


Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting, CPA designation an asset
  • 5+ years of experience in accounting and/or financial analysis
  • Detail-oriented with the abilitiy to work to deadlines
  • Strong demonstrated use of Excel, Netsuite ERP software experience preferred
  • Team player with excellent communication skills
