The Assistant Director of Biosafety is responsible for the implementation of the Tulane University Biosafety Program at Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) under the supervision of the Executive Director of Biosafety. The Assistant Director provides services directly to TNPRC personnel through field consultations, technical assistance, training, data collection, and analysis. The employee is responsible for the development of a comprehensive biosafety program at Tulane University in accordance with federal, state, local regulations and university policy. The employee may be delegated supervision of biosafety staff by the Executive Director of Biosafety.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Professional certification or eligibility for certification (Certified Biological Safety Professional, Registered Biosafety Professional, and Certified Industrial Hygienist) required.Competency in biomedical processes, equipment, and facilities.Ability to communicate complex technical issues to diverse clients. Skills in customer service and collaborative attitude, as well as exceptional written and oral communication.Knowledge of database development, querying, word processing, spreadsheet development, using MS Office to accomplish work-related tasks is required.Ability to teach and train staff of varying experience levels on biosafety practices and procedures in a classroom and in interactive laboratory environments.Well-honed communication and relationship-building skills with a collaborative orientation.Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection equipment (negative pressure PAPR or N95).Ability to successfully pass and maintain a Security Risk Assessment (SRA) background check through the Criminal Justice Investigation Service of the Department of Justice to use, transfer, or store biological select agents and toxins.Required Education and/or Experience

Master’s Degree in safety, industrial hygiene, microbiology, molecular biology, biology, public health or other related discipline is required, along with relevant experience working as a laboratorian or research scientist in a biological laboratory.Five (5) years of experience as a biosafety professional.Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree in safety, industrial hygiene, microbiology, molecular biology, biology, public health or other related discipline.Experience in a University research environment.Background working directly with rDNA or infectious materials in laboratories registered for use of select agents, BSL3/ABSL3 or other high consequence biological pathogens.10 years of experience as a biosafety professional.Compensation Information
