The Vassar College Library is seeking a Library Specialist to join the Collections & Discovery Department. The incoming Library Specialist will perform copy cataloging in a variety of formats, supervise students who mark, label, and prepare library materials for shelving, assist in the processing of Government Document materials, and process gift books for the Main Library. This position will report to the Head of Collections & Discovery.Responsibilities:Maintain all aspects of the physical processing of library materials, including the training and supervision of students who mark, label, and prepare library materials for shelving.Copy catalog monographs in all formats, using the MARC bibliographic scheme, according to current cataloging standards, including Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Library of Congress Classification.Contribute to the processing of Government Documents, gift books, and other special materials.Qualifications:Required:Understanding of the importance of the Library’s role in achieving the educational mission of a college or university, demonstrated by coursework at the college level and/or equivalent experience within an academic setting.Previous experience with the MARC bibliographic format or in library technical services.Knowledge of bibliographic standards, such as Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Library of Congress Classification.Demonstrated ability to perform exacting work with attention to detail despite interruptions.Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize appropriately.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.Must be able to understand the inter-relatedness of tasks.Must be highly motivated with a strong sense of responsibility and curiosity.Must be flexible and learn new skills.Preferred:Training in college libraries.Previous experience (at least one year) with monographic copy cataloging.Previous experience with OCLC.Previous experience working with an integrated library system (such as Ex Libris’ Alma).Previous experience with additional technical services functions within a library, such as acquisitions, electronic resources, and/or serials.Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Google suite of tools.Associate’s degree or higher.Special Instructions to Applicants:
