DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Metadata Services department encompasses a host of collection-related work, including electronic resources management, acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, and physical processing. This position will join a highly collaborative team of librarians and staff working to support the core mission of the library by enabling access to materials that support scholarly research and pedagogy and maintaining the integrity of our Alma bibliographic database.
JOB SUMMARY
The University Library Cataloging Specialist will join the Metadata Services department in the pivotal role of providing accurate descriptions for our unique resources.
The cataloger is responsible for providing original and complex copy cataloging in all formats, with a focus on streaming and physical media, as well as database maintenance projects, authority work for general library materials, and serving as a departmental resource for adherence to national and international cataloging standards and local policy. In addition, the Cataloging Specialist is responsible for understanding and applying digital object metadata best practices, specifications, and descriptive standards as needed and where indicated.
This position has student assistant supervisory responsibilities, overseeing the work of both the physical processing student workers and digital object metadata processing student workers. The Cataloging Specialist will also serve on relevant UCSC and systemwide committees.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $74,039.23 – $85,046.83/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
65% – Cataloging
Provide original and complex copy cataloging for all materials in all languages for the general library collection according to current national/international cataloging standards, accepted best practices, and local policy. Formats cataloged include, but are not limited to, textual monographs, video, video games, sound recordings and scores.
Responsible for creating, editing, and reviewing catalog records, ensuring the quality of records contributed to WorldCat and brought in to the library’s database. Responsible for reviewing original and complex cataloging work of departmental staff.
Serves as a resource person for cataloging, monitoring trends and changes in national and international standards and best practices for bibliographic control of library materials.
Responsible for documenting procedures and workflows.
Serves on appropriate working groups.
20% – Special Projects
Supervises and participates in special projects related to cataloging, database maintenance/integrity, and authority control.
15% – Student Supervision
Handles all aspects of hiring, training, timekeeping, and supervision of departmental student assistants.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
Significant experience cataloging a variety of formats.
Familiarity with MARC and/or BIBFRAME metadata standards and controlled vocabularies.
Familiarity with descriptive standards/guidelines such as the Original RDA Toolkit.
Demonstrated commitment to the value of equitable and inclusive metadata.
Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to address highly complex or specialized solutions.
Advanced interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a variety of people and situations, including providing guidance to other library professionals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Familiarity with tools used for bibliographic description, such as OCLC Connexion or Record Manager.
Familiarity with integrated library systems/platforms such as Ex Libris Alma.
Supervisory experience/experience working with student workers.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
