Overview

Closely oversees day to day agriculture field operations and infrastructure maintenance, including but not limited to construction and maintenance of all structures, irrigation systems, pesticide applications, and roads. Supervises ongoing operations, plans, budgets and makes recommendations regarding future inventory and staffing needs. Trains and supervises staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient operation. Responsible for performance management. Supervises land, labor, facilities and other resources for current and proposed research projects. Participates in safety training and ongoing reviews. Provides management and supervisory skills necessary to support the agricultural research and production agriculture on the experiment station, specifically in pest and weed management in vegetable and forage crop areas.

The full salary range for the Agricultural Supervisor 1 is $64,300 - $114,300 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $64,300 - $76,800 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a university employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable university policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Educational Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent certification. Preferred

College degree in an agriculturally related field and one year of supervisory experience in farming operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred

Experience Requirements

4 - 7 years of related experience. Required

Forklift experience/certificate. Required

Experience and skill in a supervisory role, responsible for hiring, evaluating, directing, disciplining, and complaint resolution. Required

Experience and skill in the development and the maintenance of agricultural research plots. Required

Experience and knowledge of crop culture specifically relating to research plots and groves available for commercial harvest and non-crop areas. Required

Previous supervisory/managerial experience. Preferred

Experience working in/with a research environment. Preferred

License Requirements

Valid Drivers License. Required

Certification Requirements

Possess a valid QAC. Required

Skills to operate farming and specialized construction equipment. Required

Working knowledge of chemical applications appropriate for irrigated pastures, right-of-ways, and rangelands. Required

Interpersonal skills to effectively supervise, train, evaluate, and motivate others. Required

Communication skills; both verbally and in writing. Required

Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, delegate work assignments, and evaluate results. Required

Knowledge, ability and experience in pest management and fertilizer materials, their uses, equipment calibration, precision applications and implementing safety requirements for their use. Required

Ability to read, write and speak English effectively to communicate with peers, subordinates and researchers. Required

Ability, experience and skill in the operation of specialized equipment used for tree crops, forage, vegetable and row crop practices. Required

Knowledge and experience in keeping records and filing regulatory documents. Required

Intermediate level computer skills (Microsoft Office Professional). Required

Ability to pass respirator fit test. Required

Successfully pass a background investigation through the Department of Justice. Required

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of all applicable UC, Collective Bargaining, and government policy and safety regulations.

Bilingual ability in Spanish.

Ability and knowledge to operate a tug for delivery of soil trailers.

Key Responsibilities

Handles more complex issues raised by subordinates. 40%

Tillage Practices---Coordinates and performs tillage practices for row crop areas including land preparation for new planting, furrowing, retracing, and cultivating. Supervises and coordinates land care of non-allocated areas which include but not limited to mechanical weed control, fence lines, management of cover crop in lay by areas, and remediation between research projects. 40%

Riverside Agricultural Experiment Station and Coachella Valley Agricultural Research Station (CVARS)---Under direction plans, organizes and provides oversight of field cultural operations for CVARS. 20%

Communication and Administrative Functions---Communicates with Principal Investigators, SRA's, Post-docs, students and Agricultural Operations Administration on research plots for the success of the project in a manner appropriate to the circumstance (telephone, e-mail, project meeting). 5%

Maintenance and Repairs---Ensure equipment is maintained and minor repairs are completed for cultivation equipment including such things as replacement of worn discs, rototiller teeth, and harrow teeth. Other duties as assigned. 0%
