The Northeast Region of Colorado Parks and Wildlife has 15 State Parks and more than 70 State Wildlife Areas and exists to provide outdoor recreation and wildlife management in the northeast region of Colorado.

This position serves as the Northeast Region’s volunteer recruitment, management, and coordination expert. This includes recruiting, orienting, and engaging volunteers to fulfill business needs identified by staff; leading volunteer orientations and trainings and coordinating staff training; providing guidance and technical expertise to managers and staff to support volunteer program development; working with staff to design and implement regional volunteer projects; and managing the regional volunteer work package budget following cost center manager direction. This position advises the Regional Manager, Deputy Regional Managers, and other regional staff regarding regional volunteer program management and the region’s long-term goals. This position advises field staff on regional, statewide, and national volunteer trends, issues, policies, and procedures, and trains employees and volunteers on these trends and issues to maintain consistency across the region and in alignment with other regions. Additionally, this position oversees the regional use of the online database used to manage volunteer projects and track volunteer hours.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:Coordinate, Manage, and Direct Volunteer Program in the Northeast RegionAssess the need and potential across the Northeast Region for volunteer positions and projects. Evaluate need and potential in relation to agency mission and regional goals and direct appropriate resources according to priority. Design a strategy and communicate strategy to staff to set expectations and establish standards for projects and needs. Coordinate with regional staff to identify new or ongoing volunteer projects and associated resources that will be required. Recruit new volunteers including from communities and demographics with historically low volunteer participation with CPW. Train new and existing volunteers using professional standards and best practices. Set goals for the regional volunteer program in coordination with region management. Evaluate volunteer projects and the program across the region to determine effectiveness at meeting goals. Make recommendations for improvement. Manage and evaluate volunteers, provide corrective direction or training, and remove from program when necessary. Coordinate recognition and retention strategies for volunteers – including events and recognition items - following agency procedure and directives. Conduct background checks in accordance with statewide volunteer policies and procedures.

Volunteer Engagement Software – Training, Management, and TrackingServe as the region’s SME on the volunteer engagement software and act as a resource for staff and volunteers in navigating database and effectively utilizing all the available tools and resources. Develop and reinforce standards and guidelines for staff and volunteers in cooperation with other regional coordinators and statewide coordinator for using database. Provide staff and volunteer training on how to use the database and ensure volunteer metrics and outcomes are properly and accurately reported.

Support Parks’ Volunteer ProgramsCollaborate with 15 state parks in the NE Region to maintain or create volunteer programs specific to each park including volunteer hosts, naturalists, gate attendants, maintenance, and other volunteer functions core to park operations.

Region RepresentationRepresent Northeast Region on boards, committees, councils, and other groups related to volunteers. Act as the primary contact for CPW volunteers in the Northeast Region.

Administrative Duties and Budget ManagementIn consultation with Cost Center supervisor, develop and manage annual budget for volunteer program. Follow all policies, procedures, and fiscal rules in making purchases for recognition events, materials, trainings, and equipment.

Minimum QualificationsSeven (7) years of relevant experience in volunteer management, community engagement, program management/coordination, organizational development, human resources, communications, education, or other professional, volunteer, or lived experience related to the work assigned to this position.

OR

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in volunteer management, community engagement, program management, natural resource management, nonprofit or public administration, human resources, or communications equal to seven (7) years.

Current or former State experience relevant to this position.Current or former Colorado Parks & Wildlife work or volunteer experience.Project management experience, including project team leadership.Demonstrated history of working with volunteers with practical experience in volunteer project management in outdoor settings.Conditions of Employment

State of Colorado residency is required at the time of application.Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license if operating a State vehicle.Overnight travel within the state required 2-3 times per year.
