The Transportation and Toxics Division (TTD) of California Air Resources Board (CARB) is searching for an experienced air toxics regulatory and program expert to fill the Staff Air Pollution Specialist (SAPS) position within the Exposure Reduction Section. The Exposure Reduction Section (ERS) conducts health and exposure analyses to support regulatory and non-regulatory actions and works collaboratively with agencies and impacted communities to identify, understand, and reduce air pollutant exposure in California.

The SAPS will serve as a lead and program expert in air dispersion modeling and health risk assessment using AERMOD and CALPUFF. Responsibilities include training and mentoring new staff in health risk assessment tools, coordinating technical projects, translating results into plain language policy recommendations, and facilitating cross-divisional teams in toxics projects.

The responsibilities of this SAPS position include supporting CARB’s environmental justice policies and initiatives. The SAPS will assist in the work of other CARB programs to provide critical information regarding exposure to air toxics, analyze community-related emissions, evaluate source test and monitoring data, and interpret effects from the application of emission reduction control technologies and strategies to support efforts to reduce air toxics exposure within impacted overburdened communities.

Travel may be required for site visits, meetings with community groups, other regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and conferences.

This position can be located in Sacramento or Riverside County.

Working Conditions:

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

The positions at CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $10,015.00 - $12,538.00 per month
