FLSA Status: Non-ExemptThis supervisory position oversees the day-to-day functions of the crime scene unit, ensuring the proper processing of crime scenes and maintenance of evidence collected. Maintains fingerprint files and performs background investigations. Reports to a Police Captain.Responsibilities:

Supervises crime scene unit technicians; supervisory duties include assigning, planning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities and acting on employee problems. Evaluates performance and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers training, advice and assistance as needed.Reviews reports submitted by subordinates for completeness and accuracy.Ensures the availability of necessary equipment and supplies for daily tasks; orders supplies as needed.Participates in crime scene investigations, including searching for, locating, collecting, identifying, documenting and preserving physical evidence. Photographs/diagrams crime scenes, evidence and victims as necessary; develops film.Ensures the proper storage, handling and maintenance of all evidence taken into custody.Disposes of drugs, weapons, bio-hazardous materials, auction items and various other confiscated items according to established procedures.Fingerprints applicants for city positions; proofreads, files and routes prisoners' fingerprint cards to appropriate personnel. Prepares identification cards.Performs background investigations on occupational license applicants.Properly mixes and uses chemicals for processing latent fingerprints and photography.Receives, reviews, prepares and/or processes a variety of documents, including crime scene reports, property receipts, latent reports, fingerprint cards, crime scene documentation, cash receipts, purchase orders, performance evaluations, memos, correspondence, etc.Operates a vehicle, two-way radio, cameras, fingerprint kit, crime scene processing equipment, and other police-issued equipment, as well as a variety of other equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, copier, two-way radio, typewriter, laminating machine, etc. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment required to complete assigned tasks.Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, subordinates, other department supervisors and employees, attorneys, city personnel, court personnel, sales representatives, and the general public.Maintains an efficient working environment, establishing relationships with the general public, co-workers, officials and members of various cultural backgrounds.Performs assigned duties and serves the general public and fellow employees with respect, honesty, integrity, alertness and vigilance.Performs a wide variety of routine office tasks, including but not limited to answering the telephone, preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, entering computer data, etc.Performs related duties as required.Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or GED equivalent and 3-5 years of experience in crime scene processing and analysis of evidence; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Must successfully complete department training in crime scene procedures.Must pass a background screening.Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles and methods of crime scene processing, evidence collection and preservation.Knowledge of the laws and regulations regarding evidence handling.Knowledge of the tools and equipment related to photography and evidence collection, preservation, and processing.Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment.Ability to respond to supervision, guidance and direction of superiors in a positive, receptive manner and in accordance with stated policies and procedures.Ability to demonstrate a polite, helpful and courteous manner when engaged with the general public.Ability to operate and care for equipment to manufacturer’s specifications.Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with colleagues and the public.Physical Demands:

Requires moderate physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds. May require frequent crouching, kneeling, bending, and stooping. Frequent periods of standing or walking may be required.
