Position SummaryThis incumbent is responsible for the care of client-owned animals brought to the Pet Health Center for general veterinary care including spay/neuter procedures, dental, and outpatient surgery.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or CompetenciesThis employee provides hands-on care and skills as a Veterinary Assistant while aiding in the care and treatment of patients at the Pet Health Center.

Assists Registered Veterinary Technicians in nursing care to help manage all aspects of the patient's treatment.

Perform day to day Veterinary Assistant duties in the PHC that consists of dental procedures, otic lavage, wound clipping, prepping, flushing, bandaging, casts, sedate, suture skin, catheterize, venipuncture, injections, medicating, CPR, maintaining of airway and circulatory system management, drug dosage calculations, reconstituting and administering drugs, I.V. fluids, assist clinicians with neurology examinations.

Training senior veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and new nursing staff in the PHC.

Assisting and instructing the new employees, senior veterinary students and veterinary technician students with the various duties performed in the Pet Health Center; receiving, patient examinations, dentistry, dental radiology, obtaining specimens and testing.

Stock supplies of cleaning products and patient care equipment. Insure facility cleanliness with the use of mop, broom, chemical cleaning supplies to sanitize cages/kennels, sterilize instruments using an autoclave.

Entering lab work into the lab computer system and checking results.

Pulling up clients records in the VetView system and entering procedure and consultation fees.

Obtain specimen samples and performing diagnostic procedures, i.e.; glucose monitoring, skin scraping, biopsies, allergy testing, fungal interpretations, cystocentesis, endoscopy, electrocardiology, echocardiography, biopsies, cytology preps, etc.

Ability to scrub in and assist in surgical procedures.

Knowledge of how to work around a sterile environment and knowledge of instruments and their use.

Monitoring patients while under anesthesia for procedures demanded of the particular service.
