About the Department

The Strategy & Rare Disease (STARS) organization drives the long-term strategic direction of Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI)/North America Operations (NAO) and leads all US commercial efforts for Novo Nordisk’s Rare Disease portfolio. The mandate of STARS is to facilitate the development and to coordinate the execution of the long-term strategy, defining a sustainable business model in US beyond a 5-year time horizon. This department serves as the insiders of the US market when informing and help shaping upstream decisions around future investments and assets. The Rare Disease portfolio includes products in the hemophilia and growth disorders therapeutic areas, new products in the pipeline, and products acquired through business development efforts in existing and new areas. The STARS team collaborates and partners with groups across NAO, Research & Early Development, Development, innovation hubs across NN, other affiliates, and global. The Position

This role serves as strategic advisor, consultant and key implementer for the Rare Disease BU head, planning and directing all key operational, transformational, administrative, planning and engagement efforts, and ensuring preparedness for all executive engagements. This position is also responsible for leading strategic initiatives ensuring alignment with enterprise goals, and managing executive, internal and external communications to enhance BU reputation and stakeholder engagement. The role is multi-faceted supporting the BU Head and spearheading LT & cross-functional initiative and informs key long-term investments and priorities for NNI Rare Disease.

Relationships

Reports to the Rare Disease Business Unit Head and serves as a key member and contributor to the Rare Disease Leadership Team. This position interacts with senior leadership (Executive Team and their Leaders) and works closely with key stakeholders across Rare Disease (e.g., Business and Commercial Excellence, Strategic Partnerships & Engagement, Field Sales, Rare Disease Commercial Strategy & Marketing, Ecosystem and Enterprise Influence, EE, Finance and Operations and Human Resources) as well as with cross-functional counterparts (CMR, Communications, MAPA, Finance, Global). External relationships include interactions with various vendors and consultants based on the needs of special projects or implementation of new programs. Provide oversight for cross-organizational working groups to ensure alignment.

Essential Functions

Supports the Head of the Rare Disease Business Unit on strategic opportunities, initiatives, goals and objectives

Develop executive narrative and storytelling (via powerpoint and scripts) to communicate the BU strategy, tactical plans, performance, direction, business cases, inspiration and updates

Develop communications for effective engagement, alignment and execution

Delivers executive documents and presentations including, but not limited to Strategy to Action, Global Strategy Deep Dives, Therapy Area Plans, Business and performance updates, EVP written briefings, BU National Meetings, Executive team updates

Support the advancement of the Rare Disease BU Culture and engagement

Liaises with cross-functional ET Strategic Advisors

Partners closely with the Global Rare Disease EVP Strategic Advisor to support strong cohesive collaboration between the US and global organization

Coordinate, inform and partner with relevant global teams on behalf of NAO Rare Disease to ensure that the RD NAO perspective is represented appropriately in global plans and considerations

Demonstrate a deep understanding of the Rare Disease business across Rare Bleeding, Rare Endocrine, Rare Renal and Hemaglobinopathies

Drive strategic projects to secure organizational efficiencies or maximize performance opportunities in alignment with company priorities, strategic direction and NN WAY

Monitor progress and performance of strategic projects, identifying and mitigating risks, and ensuring alignment with overall business unit and enterprise goals

Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to drive operational efficiency and effectiveness

Support development of an unified NNI Rare Disease strategic commercialization plan prioritizing all future opportunities to inform future investment decision

Accountable for development of a customer centric, Rare Disease strategy for new assets and therapy areas as needed and to transition to RD CS&M

Provide input on BD opportunities relevant to NAO Rare Disease

Partner with NNI Rare Disease BU Head, HR Business Partner, and other key stakeholders to manage and support the Rare Disease organization

Drive strategic changes and deliver transformative improvements in performance and customer excellence

Manage the portfolio and prioritization of strategic change and transformation initiatives

Responsible for developing and executing the Rare Disease change management and transformation approach

Demonstrate strong leadership role across the organization, by engaging in close collaboration with key internal stakeholders to drive a unified enterprise approach for the BU

Responsible for informing long-term investments and supporting priorities for NNI Rare Disease across the enterprise

Plan and execute Town Halls, offsite meetings and retreats for the LT and the business unit, including agenda development, logistics coordination, and follow-up activities

Drive effective organizational alignment to company priorities, strategy development, scorecard management, planning & budgeting, strategic initiatives, and relevant communications

Drive and execute strategic projects for Head of Rare Disease combining external insights and internal thinking to propose appropriate operational and financial activities

Participate as an active member of the leadership team to shape the strategy and culture and always challenging the status quo to ensure success of the Rare Disease unit

Define and articulate the future strategic direction of the organization, identifying emerging trends, disruptive technologies, and potential market shifts that may impact Rare’s portfolio

Develop strategic initiatives and investment priorities to position the BU for long term success and sustainable growth in the future

Physical Requirements

15-20% overnight travel required.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Science, Lifescience or similar required. Master’s degree preferred in relevant area

10+ years of progressive business, strategic planning, operations, consulting, or related business experience required, preferably within the pharmaceutical industry

Ability to synthesize complex information into user-friendly, persuasive formats and presentations

Ability to adapt to rapidly changing business requirements and operate at both the strategic and tactical level

Demonstrated ability to develop practical solutions to broad, complex issues with minimal oversight

Possess superior communication skills, both oral, written and presentation, and ability to engender trust and respect of peers and superiors

Ability to effectively prioritize, execute and follow-up in a timely manner, anticipating problems and roadblocks

Hands-on experience in project/portfolio resource planning, reporting, prioritization, and budgeting

Prior consulting experience and/or significant proven project experience required

Proven ability to work with and influence senior management

Proven strategic track record to think ahead and plan over a 3–5-year time horizon

Very strong analytical capabilities

Experience successfully leading complex confidential projects

Highly articulate, goal-oriented, honest, with high integrity and strong ethics

Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word software applications and overall advanced computer skills with knowledge of literature search techniques required

Proven track record of strong teamwork, innovation, and project management
