SEMH Teaching Assistant

to join our client schools, supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role is perfect for individuals dedicated to helping young people overcome emotional and behavioural challenges, promoting their academic and personal growth.Job Summary:As an

SEMH Teaching Assistant , you will work closely with students who have a range of SEMH needs, providing academic and emotional support in collaboration with classroom teachers and SEN staff. You will play a critical role in creating a positive, nurturing environment that helps students engage with their education, manage their behaviour, and develop social skills.Key Responsibilities for SEMH Teaching Assistant:Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, focusing on their academic progress and emotional well-being.Assist in developing and implementing

Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

and

Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs)

tailored to the specific needs of each student.Help manage challenging behaviours using

de-escalation techniques

and positive behaviour support strategies.Facilitate the personal and social development of students by offering targeted interventions and mentoring.Collaborate with classroom teachers to modify lesson plans and activities, ensuring SEMH students can access the curriculum effectively.Monitor and track student progress, providing feedback to staff, parents, and external professionals as required.Support students in unstructured settings, such as during breaks and lunch, helping them navigate social interactions and manage their behaviour.Work closely with external professionals such as educational psychologists, counsellors, and social workers to ensure a comprehensive approach to student care.Participate in school-wide initiatives to promote emotional well-being and mental health awareness.Maintain accurate and detailed records of student behaviour, interventions, and progress for use in multi-disciplinary meetings and safeguarding purposes.Provide support during off-site activities and school trips to ensure the safety and inclusion of SEMH students.Essential Requirements for SEMH Teaching Assistant:Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, either in a school, social care, or specialist setting.Strong understanding of SEMH strategies and interventions, including behaviour management and emotional regulation techniques.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents.A patient, calm, and empathetic approach, with the ability to stay composed in challenging situations.Experience in implementing

de-escalation techniques

and managing behavioural crises.A relevant qualification in

Special Educational Needs (SEN) ,

Childcare ,

Mental Health , or a related field is desirable (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Mental Health First Aid).Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people, with the ability to identify and act on safeguarding concerns.Willingness to undertake ongoing professional development to stay updated with best practices in SEMH support.An
