Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University has a student body of 1,200 undergraduates, 260 graduate students, and 70 primary and 73 program faculty. The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a professor of the practice faculty position, an academic faculty role defined by significant professional experience in the field of biomedical engineering product design and development. We are interested in candidates able to contribute to instructional excellence and ongoing pedagogical innovation in both our undergraduate and graduate programs. Candidates are also expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to mentoring students. We are especially interested in candidates who can primarily teach in our undergraduate design program, and secondarily contribute to teaching in the Masters of Biomedical Innovation and Development (MBID) program. Possible subject matter could include capstone design, regulatory affairs, medical device development, project management, quality engineering, rapid prototyping and design for manufacturability. The MBID program educates professional product development engineers to create bench-to-bedside innovations that turn research into practical improvements in patient care. Projects resulting from our undergraduate design curriculum and capstone design courses have a history of success in both local and national entrepreneurship and design competitions.Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of faculty hired under this ad will be teaching. A typical teaching load is for this position is the equivalent of six (6) courses per calendar year, with the majority of teaching assignments being at the undergraduate level. In addition, non-tenure track faculty participate in departmental service and are encouraged to engage in professional service. While research is not required, non-tenure track faculty are supported in pursuing ongoing professional development and research. Interests in engineering education research are equally welcomed. Reductions in teaching load based on education-related departmental responsibilities or participation in sponsored research projects are possible.Responsibilities for this position also include the development and management of external partnerships across the biomedical industry to create projects and define clinical mentors, classroom teaching, course development, and mentoring of student teams. For any candidate, professional experience and/or a professional network within biomedical engineering device design is a necessity. Ideal candidates will have a substantial background with diverse experiences within the product development landscape. Knowledge of product development processes, prototyping methods and hands-on experience in defining and executing projects is essential. Will serve as liaisons between industry or government and the Institute in identifying teaching and research opportunities that support the public interest and societal needs. May be expected (depending on circumstances of their appointment) to generate financial resources to support and enhance the Institute programs in which they work.Required Qualifications

Have substantial bases of experience, normally at least ten (10) to fifteen (15) years, and a national/international reputation for excellence.Have rich and extensive backgrounds in fields and disciplines related to the school or college of appointment at the Institute.Preferred Qualifications

MinimumSubstantial basis of experience (typically >10 years) in the field of medical product development.B.S. degree in an engineering discipline.A history of mentoring, managing direct reports, and working on teams.PreferredSuccessful candidates should have demonstrated professional experience in the field of biomedical engineering innovation in one or more areas such as product design, business/product development, creation of intellectual properties, verification and validation activities, FDA and ISO regulatory requirements, risk identification and mitigation, and quality systems. We prefer candidates who display a history of leadership and an ability to successfully interact and communicate with students, faculty, healthcare, and industry professionals. Experience with rapid prototyping of new technology devices (concept to working prototype) as well as teaching senior level product design classes in biomedical engineering are very desirable. A demonstrable network of contacts in the life sciences or medical device industry is a plus.We will give preference to those who provide evidence they meet some of the following criteria:An advanced degree in engineering.Professional Engineer license.Experience with regulatory affairs, intellectual property processes, or similar.Experience with teaching, especially in engineering courses.Experience with mentoring engineers, especially early career engineers.Experience with developing and managing industry-academia partnerships.Experience with leading biomedical product design and development.Experience with managing interactions between clinical partners and technical staff as part of biomedical device ideation, development, and testing.Experience with entrepreneurship, especially in areas related to biomedical engineering or FDA regulated products.Experience with novel products, investigational device exemptions, and/or technology translation from academia to commercial use.Required Documents to Attach
