Under limited supervision and with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, performs complex research work by assisting in the development, implementation, and monitoring of specialized research projects. Manages the upkeep, training, and supervision of specialized research equipment within area of assigned responsibility.Description of Duties

The following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:Researches how biosignatures are affected by riverine dynamics in extraterrestrial environments, with applications to exploration efforts for Titan and/or Mars.Determines if chemical or morphological biosignatures altered due to riverine dynamics.Researches how sedimentary deposition affects biosignature preservation and detectability.Determines if biosignatures spatially segregated predictably across sedimentary basins, informing current and future space exploration efforts.Conducts a terrestrial analogy study.Successfully attends one conference annually, such as Astrobiology Science Conference (AbSciCon) and American Geophysical Union (AGU).Develops, tests, and analyzes research projects based on application expertise and interest.Aides in the development of a survey instrument, testing the instrument and disseminating the instrument.Writes narrative summaries of the research results, and related tasks under the supervision of the faculty member assigned.Conducts background research.Develops and implements an evaluation plan and preparing progress reports as needed.Studies, tests, and maintains accurate data identified as relevant and/or best practice systems from research results obtained through national studies.Designs and implements training activities as required.Publishes in peer-reviewed publications related to the focus of the research activities assigned.Performs other job-related duties as assigned.Supervision

General supervision from immediate faculty supervisor.Supervision Given:

None.Required Education

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Earth or Planetary Sciences, or related disciplines at the time of appointment.Required Experience

Expertise with analytical chemistry instrumentation, such as GC/LC-MS, NMR, Raman.Preferred Experience

Experience in conducting research in the field of geomorphology or related fields.Field experience in geochemical, geomorphological, and hydrological surveys for conducting terrestrial analog studies.Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.Additional Information
