The Marie Lab in the Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks a Senior Scientist. The research in the Marie Lab seeks to understand the mechanisms through which parasites invade host cells, and how the host immune system coordinates defense, inflammation, and tissue homeostasis. In this context, we take a special interest in understanding host cell gene expression during infection in both in vitro and in vivo systems. The Senior Scientist is expected to have sufficient experience and background to organize small research groups and perform assigned tasks on their own initiative with minimal direction.Responsibilities include:Organize small research groupsSupervise Lab Technicians and other lab workersDirect mouse infection experimentsDirect clinical data analysis by studentsInterface with biostatisticians to determine appropriate data analysis methodsManage ACUC protocols and approvals and ensure compliance with approved protocols and regulationsManage biosafety inventory and ensure compliance with biosafety regulationsManage IRB regulations governing human subjects research and maintain current CITI certification for human subjects clinical researchEnsure all human subjects work is conducted in compliance with IRB regulations and that all students are properly trainedMaintain detailed records of data and data analysisOversee deposition of data in public databasesSupervise ordering by Lab TechnicianPrepare figures for presentations and for publicationWrite grants and manuscriptsPerform assigned tasks on their own initiative with minimal directionIn addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assignedThe position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.Minimum Qualifications:Education: Doctoral degree in Bioengineering, Microbiology, or other physical or biological sciencePreferred Qualifications/Experience:Ability to communicate expectations and progress clearly, asking for help when neededAbility to work independently and as part of a team and ability to respond to feedback.Highly organized, detail-oriented, and reliable.Quantitative analysis of immunological responses by high dimensional flow cytometry and ELISAAdvanced microscopy techniques including TEMQuantitative PCR (DNA, RNA, and genotyping)Murine models of enteric infectionHistologic sample preparation, processing, and analysesAdvanced data and biostatistical analyses including linear mixed effects models using RRNA-sequencing experimental design and analysesMicrobial profiling using advanced sequencingPhysical Demands:This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs and may occasionally require time outside of normal work hours.The position will remain open until filled.
