Class Summary

Under direction, is responsible for work of considerable difficulty involving supervision and administration in fire department operations including direct command of a Fire Suppression Battalion, specialized work in administering a continuous training program, enforcing fire prevention standards, laws and ordinances, arson investigation work, and promoting public cooperation; and performs other administrative assignments as required.

Representative Duties

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting.

Essential Duties :

Assumes command of assigned companies on a shift unless relieved by a superior;

Inspects equipment, apparatus and quarters; schedules and supervises work assignments;

Coordinates actions of other public agencies assisting in certain emergencies;

Directs fire prevention programs in the battalion;

Responsible for personnel evaluation regarding job performance;

Instructs Fire Department personnel about firefighting and fire control measures;

Administers a continuous training program for all firefighting personnel;

Conducts classroom lectures, presentations, and gives demonstrations on fire protection and firefighting methods;

Assumes command and directs all departmental equipment and personnel in response to emergencies within the battalion unless relieved by a superior officer;

Plans, assigns, and supervises fire prevention and other inspections;

Performs specialized supervisory and technical inspection work in enforcing fire prevention standards; assists in preparing budgets;

Prepares work schedules for maintenance and repairs to department buildings, grounds and components;

Assigns and supervises related work through subordinate officers;

Prepares related reports; prepares fire and rescue reports arising from firefighting operations;

Assists in departmental planning as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and equipment of modern firefighting;

Comprehensive knowledge of the operational and maintenance requirements of overall department operations;

Considerable knowledge of recent developments, current literature, and sources of information in municipal fire administration;

Considerable knowledge of the management, organization, function, and procedure of a modern municipal fire department, considerable knowledge of modern management techniques.

Ability to:

Ability to plan, schedule and assign departmental work on a short and long-term basis;

Ability to supervise and evaluate subordinates effectively;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and the general public;

Ability to lead under emergency conditions.

Training and Experience:

One (1) year as a Fire Captain with the Bakersfield Fire Department;

AND

Associate of Art/Science Degree;

AND

California State Fire Chief Officer Certification;

OR

Completion of all course curriculum and applied for the California State Fire Chief Officer Certificate;

OR

Completed the California State Chief Fire Officer curriculum.

Licenses, Certificates or Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid California driver's license;

Possession of a certificate which meets the emergency medical care requirements for firefighters within the State of California.
