Senior Scientist - Halic Lab

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, us, 37544

We are looking for an accomplished and enthusiastic researcher to join the Department of Structural Biology as a Senior Scientist to drive new, interdisciplinary research initiatives. The successful candidate will focus on cryo-electron tomography to explore chromatin processes in cells. Expertise in cryo-electron microscopy is required and some experience in cryo-ET is preferred.

The World’s Brightest Minds Always Innovate

At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we know what can be achieved when the brightest scientific minds face the fewest barriers. That’s why we provide world-class facilities, state-of-the-art technologies, extraordinary support, and a collaborative, bench-to-bedside environment where you can see, firsthand, how your science translates into survival for the children we serve. Quite simply, at St. Jude, we encourage you to dream big and stop at nothing when it comes to finding cures and saving children.

The Halic lab studies the epigenetic regulation of gene expression using genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and structural biology approaches. We apply genetics and molecular biology tools to investigate heterochromatin formation in fission yeast and we use cryo-EM to examine chromatin organization and dynamics. While we have focused mainly on single-particle analyses of reconstituted complexes, we aim to use cryo-ET to visualize chromatin processes in their native environment, i.e., inside the nuclear compartment.

You will be part of a vibrant community at the Department of Structural Biology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, with state-of-the-art facilities that enable integrative structural biology and biophysics investigations — including cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, biomolecular NMR, single-molecule imaging, and protein-protein interactions — combined with computational and data-science approaches.

Our Cryo-EM Center features a 300keV Titan Krios and a 200keV Talos Arctica electron microscopes, each equipped with K3 direct electron detector and BioQuantum energy filter. A second Titan Krios with Falcon 4i and Selectris X imaging filter is dedicated to cryo-ET projects. The Center was recently upgraded with a Zeiss Crossbeam FIB-SEM and a ThermoScientific Arctis Cryo-Plasma-FIB will be added soon.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required.

Graduate degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

Ten (10) years relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Bachelor's degree.

Eight (8) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree.

Six (6) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD.
