Position Summary:

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Information Officer, the Director of Academic Technology is a strategic leader responsible for the integration of technology in teaching, learning, and research within the William & Mary W&M. This role demands a comprehensive approach to technology implementation and management, ensuring that technological resources align with the institution’s mission and goals. The Director of Academic Technology will foster an environment that embraces innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement, positioning W&M at the forefront of educational technology. The Director serves as a key member of the IT leadership team and collaborates with IT leadership to develop and execute the strategic plan for academic technology at W&M. The position also partners directly with multiple stakeholder groups, including but not limited to Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation (STLI), Swem Library and the Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee (TLAC).

Conditions of Employment:This position is subject to additional hours that extend beyond the typical work hours, to include weekend or holiday work.May require occasional overnight travel as needed.Information Security: This position requires administrative access to the university’s information systems and/or sensitive university data. The incumbent is expected to be aware of and adhere to the information security policies of the university as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws, follow information security best practices applicable to their job area, and to pursue information security training and awareness opportunities when possible.

Required Qualifications:EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree with significant experience of increasing responsibility and specialized expertise directly related to the position.

COMPETENCIES:Ability to develop and execute long-term strategic plans that align technology with institutional goals and needs.In-depth, working knowledge of integrative and innovative learning technologies used in both physical learning spaces and digital learning environments. Ability to leverage emerging trends to drive effective solutions.Leadership skills with the ability to provide mentoring and development to a talented team of technology professionals.Ability to work collaboratively and demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with campus constituents as a cohesive team player.Strong project management skills with the demonstrated ability to manage multiple relationships and project priorities concurrently.Capable of fostering innovation by exploring new technologies and creative approaches to problem-solving.

EXPERIENCE:Demonstrated record of developing and managing innovative and effective services, including learning management systems (LMS) and in-person teaching environments for a diverse community of faculty, students, administrative staff, and researchers.Experience in managing and developing diverse teams, fostering collaboration and innovation in a technology-driven environment.Solid experience with current communication, collaboration, and media technologies, as well as enterprise digital information systems within higher education.Substantive experience in evaluating and working with existing and emerging productivity, research, teaching, and learning software.Experience in building and maintaining relationships with technology vendors and external partners to support institutional goals.

Preferred Qualifications:EDUCATION:

Advanced degree in a directly related field is highly preferred.

COMPETENCIES:Proficiency utilizing educational technologies including multiple learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, D2L Brightspace)Change management certifications (ITIL, PROSCI, etc)Project management certifications (Project+, PMP, PMA, etc)

EXPERIENCE:Extensive experience working in an academic setting providing leadership for support services is highly desirable.

Advertised Pay Range:

$80,000 to $111,000 commensurate with experience

Advertised Pay Range Statement:

All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
