Bellarmine College Preparatory, a Jesuit secondary school, has been educating young “men for others” in the Jesuit tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, since 1851.

Bellarmine College Preparatory, located in San José, California, invites applications for a full-time Director, Marketing & Communications to join the Advancement Team. The Director of Marketing & Communications serves as a strategic partner to senior administrators, the Advancement team, and faculty/staff in the areas of internal and external communications. This individual will play a vital role in helping lead, develop, and implement proactive external communications plans to deliver intended messaging, ensure continuity, and reinforce the vision, mission, values, and initiatives of Bellarmine College Preparatory. He/she will be an ambassador and, when appropriate, spokesperson for the school and will build relationships with its constituents, as well as drive broader awareness and support for Bellarmine. The Director of Marketing & Communications has responsibilities in key areas of communications, with particular emphasis on content development, writing, and project management for publications, website, and media relations.

Primary Responsibilities:

Communications

Lead communications strategy and identify where, when, and how to position the school;

Write and edit copy for a wide range of publications and communication vehicles including brochures, invitations, emails/mailings, magazine/annual report, newsletters, admissions brochures, the website and more;

Oversee the school’s email communication platform including managing templates, user permissions, content, audiences, email segmentation, etc.;

Be an effective storyteller to best reflect the Bellarmine community;

Write and/or edit speeches and executive communications, as needed;

Serve as editor of the Bellarmine magazine;

Working with senior administrators, create and implement communications-related policies pertaining to Bellarmine College Preparatory;

Provide communications-related support across the school;

Assist senior administration with crisis communications when needed.

Public Relations

Write Bellarmine-focused communications (press releases) for external awareness;

Support/manage media inquiries;

Foster relationships with local media representatives, e.g. reporters, editors, publishers;

Coordinate strategic community partnerships (e.g. event sponsorships).

Marketing

Lead marketing strategy and identify appropriate partners for institutional presence in the community;

With the support of the Creative Design Manager, manage and approve elements of the Bellarmine brand including logos, fonts and PMS colors for use in communications-related pieces such as marketing collateral, invitations, advertising, posters/signage, email/web communications, and logo wear/gear;

Drive marketing initiatives which pertain to school identity;

Coordinate print and broadcast marketing related to Admissions and institutional advertising, including event sponsorships.

Social Media

Oversee and lead social media strategy and presence, identify which platforms the school should use and how best to use them;

Working with the Digital Content Manager, create social media content for @BellarmineBells accounts (Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube).

Website

Work with Digital Content Manager to ensure proper messaging, content and appearance of the Bellarmine College Preparatory external website and internal portals.

Organizational Relationships

The Director of Marketing & Communications reports to the Vice President of Advancement and has direct reports including the Digital Content Manager, Creative Design Manager, and Video Production Specialist.

Qualifications/Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred;

A minimum of five years of experience in public relations or media, inclusive of planning, writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print publications;

Previous experience in Jesuit education is preferred;

Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with members of media, and in successfully positioning subject matter with media to achieve high impact placements;

Extensive writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and digital media;

Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization’s mission and goals;

Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of communications specialists;

Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills;

Self-reliant, results oriented;

Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs;

Excellent communicator;

Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive;

Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior administration, Boards of Regents and Trustees, and staff;

Passion for the mission of Bellarmine College Preparatory.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift 20 pounds, using proper lifting techniques;

Ability to sit, stand, and/or move around the applicable working environment as needed;

Ability to safely and comfortably travel around our campus;

Ability to use a keyboard (or an alternative input device) and other office equipment;

Ability to read information in printed material and on a computer screen, often for extended periods of time and/or on a mobile device/laptop.

General Information:

This position is classified as Regular Full-Time Exempt; employees in exempt positions are expected to work as many hours as their job responsibilities require, which may include evenings and weekends.

Compensation: $135k - $155K/year.

This position is eligible for Bellarmine’s excellent benefits package.
