Position: Assistant Controller

Entity: The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

Department: Finance / Accounting

Location: 3535 Market Street (hybrid)

Hours: Full Time

Summary:

  • Assistant Controller is responsible for the preparation and review of the Monthly Financial Statements in accordance with UPHS and generally accepted accounting principles and policies. This includes the fiduciary accountability, preparation and review of accurate and timely reporting on Net Patient Revenue, Bad Debt, Cash, AR Valuation, Statistics, Key Performance Indicators, Expenses, and Other Operating Revenue. Also responsible for the management, evaluation, and development of HUP's Net Patient Revenue budget ($12.0B Gross, $2.0B Net).
  • Provides financial support and leadership to entity Controller/Director. In addition, this position requires working closely with Director of Medicare Reimbursement, Director of Managed Care Reimbursement, Department Directors, Hospital Chief Operating Officer, and Hospital CFO. This also requires working closely with the VP of Patient Accounting, VP of Corporate Finance, and AVP of Financial Operations.
  • Assistant Controller is responsible for the recruitment, training and retention of talented results-oriented team.

    Asst. Controller has direct reports. This includes Supervisors/Managers, Senior Analysts, Senior Accountants, and Accountants. Asst. Controller is expected to clearly define work expectations, and ensure responsibilities are being met by each staff member. This is a hands-on Management Position who will need to balance workload with review of reports/files for accuracy. In addition, ensure all deadlines are being met in a timely fashion. This also includes being easily accessible to staff members, continuously checking in with staff to provide guidance and support, establish and ensure effective and ongoing communication. This position will assign work that uses staff skills, talents, provides challenge, allows for creativity, and offers leadership growth. Asst. Controller will conduct annual performance appraisals and address any performance issues immediately and directly. In addition, assist staff members in addressing challenges and skill deficits and encourage continuous growth to help staff realize full potential by identifying stretch objectives and creating learning plans.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the coordination and preparation of detailed analytics to support monthly results accordance with UPHS and generally accepted accounting policies. Also, identify savings opportunities.
  • Responsible for the preparation of HUP Net Patient Revenue and Bad Debt in accordance with UPHS and generally accepted accounting policies. Also responsible for HUP NPR Budget and Analysis and target setting (including end user training, reconciliation, implementation and monitoring) in accordance with hospital budget calendar.
  • Responsible for the delivery of technical and consultative support to entity Controller/Director in all applicable facets of UPHS Accounting Expense Operations and Other Operating Revenue, including General Accounting
  • Manage and review completion of monthly financial statement package, external surveys and benchmarking
  • Assists in the development and implementation of HUP Finance goals, policies, priorities and procedures
  • Leadership and Management of the quarterly and annual external audit process which requires synthesizing complex information, designing workflow and procedures and use of intuition and experience to manage this process
  • Develops process and procedures for improvement of existing systems
  • Ability to review financial statements with Senior Leadership
  • Interpret and understand the monthly close results and drivers compared to planned budget assumptions
  • Manages, trains and develops direct reports; builds succession.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support department, entity, HUP, and Organization
Education or Equivalent Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration Required
  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration or CPA License Required
  • Minimum 7+ years hands on general accounting experience Required.
  • 2-3 years of Supervisory or Managerial experience required
Skills & Abilities:

  • Hospital net revenue and accounts receivable valuation
  • Working knowledge of 3rdParty Payments contracts
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Regulations
  • Experience with HPM Cost Acct System (or similar), EPIC (or similar) Pat Acct Billing System, Lawson (or similar)
  • Demonstrated ability to build a high-performing team
  • Self-motivated; ability to multi-task and manage rapidly changing priorities
  • Complex problem solving - must skillfully lead groups through problem solving situations
  • Project Management - strong ability to develop solid plans and execute on project milestones
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, Word, Power Point and Outlook)
  • Demonstrated interpersonal/verbal communication skills
