I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

George Washington University is offering a unique opportunity for a highly skilled Instructional Technologist to become a cornerstone of the Data Science Program at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, a role that will significantly shape the future of the program.

The STEM-designated Data Science Program at GW’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences prepares students to meet that need and enter competitive careers in government, technology, private industry and much more. The successful candidate will have the chance not only to significantly enhance the program’s capstone projects, run boot camps, and manage cloud services, but also to share their knowledge and contribute to the growth of the program.

The Instructional Technologist, Data Science Program reports to the Associate Program Director in the Data Science Program.

Responsibilities:

  • Capstone Project Support:
    • Assist instructors in organizing data and setting up AWS connections for capstone projects.
    • Monitor and maintain capstone project environments and resources.
  • Boot Camp Facilitation:
    • Develop and conduct summer boot camps to help students improve their Python programming and mathematical skills.
    • Identify students who need additional support and direct them to appropriate courses or resources.
  • Cloud Service Management for Program:
    • Ensure the smooth operation and availability of cloud-based services and programs as well as resources for cloud services for data science students.
  • Project Collaboration:
    • Support and collaborate with the outside partners on student data science projects, help identify potential internship or capstone project opportunities with internal and external partners.
    • Provide technical expertise and guidance to ensure successful project execution.
  • Website Maintenance and Student Showcase:
    • Maintain and update the capstone website regularly.
    • Collaborate with faculty to showcase student work and projects on the website.
  • Student Research Support:
    • Assist faculty members, student and researchers with data acquisition, processing, and analysis for research projects.
    • Provide technical expertise in implementing and optimizing data science workflows and pipelines.
    • Contribute to the development of research proposals and grant applications directly related to instruction initiatives of the Data Science program
  • Technical Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:
    • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for data science tools, processes, and best practices.
    • Contribute to creating knowledge-sharing resources like tutorials, blog posts, or presentations.
    • Foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning within the Data Science program.

The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning additional responsibilities that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proficient in Python and R programming languages is desired.
  • Extensive experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure that are used in the program for courses and capstone projects preferred.
  • Knowledge of parallel computing frameworks such as Apache Spark used in the program in order to support student work preferred.
  • Strong understanding of data management, data processing, and data visualization techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and external partners.
  • Proven problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience in developing and delivering technical training or boot camps is a plus.

Additional Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of machine learning algorithms and techniques is desired.
  • Experience with database management systems (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) preferred.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) is desired.
  • Experience in web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for website maintenance preferred.

Hiring Range

$57,553.66 - $79,165.63
