Click for a complete list of Employee Benefits UIC is seeking a Linux Systems Administrator to join our Technology Solutions ACER team. This role collaborates with ACER staff to build, manage, and support server infrastructure including secure computing environments, databases, virtual and physical systems. Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Advanced Platforms for Research, this position will work with our clients and staff to provide reliable systems and services. ACER also encourages staff exploration of emerging technologies such as deep learning, data science, blockchain, IoT, cloud and quantum computing. Duties & Responsibilities: Provides tier 2 technical support via ticketing systems; troubleshoots nontrivial system issues; establishes a trusted relationship with faculty and researchers; attends meetings with the customers as needed. Installs operating systems, libraries, security patches and updates; Installs complex research software; provisions virtual machines and user access; configures file systems, local/network storage, firewalls/security policies. Builds new servers in the datacenter; rebuilds/reconfigures existing infrastructure including but not limited to server nodes, storage, networking. Participates in internal team meetings; contributes to setting and meeting the team's goals/targets by leveraging task management tools such as JIRA. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required: Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study Minimum 1 year of professional IT experience within System Administration & Operations which includes demonstrated experience in configuration, installation, maintenance, backup / recovery and upgrading multi-user computer systems hardware and software as well as establishing/managing user accounts. Demonstrated IT experience with Windows Server and Linux system administration and operations. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience with using command line interfaces (e.g. Bash, PowerShell) Demonstrated knowledge of Bash, Python, and other scripting languages HPC job schedulers Moab, Slurm Containerized workloads with Docker, Singularity/Apptainer, Kubernetes, Cloud computing in AWS and Azure, Configuration management Ansible, Puppet, Chef, YAML, Firewalls, routing and VLANs, Proxies, Apache and Nginx-based web services, Parallel filesystems Lustre, GPFS, NFS, CIFS, Shibboleth, LDAP and Active Directory authentication, Encryption and security policies Knowledge and/or experience with handling HIPAA/FERPA sensitive data.
