About Us
The St. Louis Jewish Community Center (the J) has been providing excellent health and cultural experiences for the entire community for over 140 years.
Summary:
The Director of HR is dedicated to fulfilling the J’s mission of enriching lives, building community, promoting inclusivity and creating meaningful Jewish experiences. The Director proactively collaborates with leadership and across departments to design, develop, and implement effective people strategies and tactics to continuously improve the J’s service, employee engagement, and profitability. The HR Director will lead all Human Resources functions including but not limited to recruitment, onboarding, performance management, compliance, employee engagement, benefits and leave administration and company-wide culture. The Director also ensures the implementation of policies and procedures and the successful operation of the HR department. This role is strategic, but also hands-on and provides full HR lifecycle support to the J’s union and non-union staff at all three locations. The J has approximately 150 full-time year-round employees and an additional 800 part-time and seasonal employees throughout the year, mainly in the summer.
Responsibilities:
Assist the organization in strategic planning and play an instrumental role in ensuring successful employee recruitment, engagement and retention initiatives that support the continued growth of the organization.
Continually evaluate and review current HR practices, handbook, and policies to make recommendations for new approaches that will support the organization and the desired employee culture.
Oversee all aspects of employee relations; ensure policies are administered fairly and consistently by providing consultative, training and coaching support to managers and supervisors.
Ensure legal compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal employment laws, including but not limited to FLSA, FMLA and ADA to minimize risk/exposure to the organization. Submit yearly EEO-1 report(s) and monthly DOL reports.
Conduct employee investigations and oversee all escalated employee issues.
Oversee and manage a performance management system that drives, recognizes and rewards high performance.
Review and oversee unemployment and workers compensation claims.
Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive compensation and benefits plan that is competitive and cost effective.
Participate in budget planning and manage departmental expenses.
Serve as the liaison to the J employee union. Manage Labor Relations Program, coordinate and participate in negotiations as needed.
Oversee Human Resources communications, including the monthly HR newsletter.
Back up for Benefits Manager as needed.
Supervise Volunteer Coordinator.
Requirements:Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or organization behavior or related field, master’s degree preferred.
Certifications for Human Resource Professionals (PHR, SPHR) preferred.
Minimum 7 years’ experience as an HR generalist/manager/director. Experience with Paylocity preferred.
Proven progressive HR experience in which both day to day and strategic efforts are required.
Comfortable working in ambiguous situations and adaptable to change.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to analyze and present information in such a way that is understood by everyone within the organization.
Able to effectively delegate, train, and develop team members throughout the organization in HR related policies and procedures.
Knowledgeable in the legalities of business law in relation to HR and employee employment rights, including wage & hour laws, recruiting, and any other federal, state, or local laws.
Strong ability to develop relationships and partner with employees at all levels.
Extremely well organized and methodical in your approach to problem solving, documentation, and ability to manage multiple tasks and an ever-changing work environment.
Demonstrated experience in working alongside executive leadership.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer.
Must be able to lift 20 pounds at times.
