The 211 Service begins with a national three-digit dialing code that connects to a live specialist with availability 24/7 via phone, text or chat. It is also an online, self-service portal to search for social service programs statewide. The majority of programs listed are nonprofits or government-operated. They help with essential needs such as housing, food, healthcare, childcare and utility assistance.
Our mission is to empower individuals by providing information, referrals, and hope to meet a broad range of health and human service needs. With an annual budget of $9 million sourced from government and charitable contributions, NJ 211 is a trusted resource for residents, professionals, and state officials during times of personal crises and statewide disasters. Nationally accredited by Inform USA, NJ 211 adheres to best practices in delivering information and referral services.
Position Overview:
The Development Director is a dynamic and results-driven leader who is responsible for the organization's fundraising efforts, focusing on securing funding through foundations, grants, sponsorships, and corporate partnerships. This individual will also develop strategic marketing plans, oversee press and public relations, and create a volunteer program to engage corporate employees. The Director of Development reports to the Chief Executive Officer, is a member of the leadership team and will play a critical role in advancing NJ 211's mission and services.
Responsibilities:
Fundraising and Donor Engagement:
Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy focused on securing funding from foundations, corporations, grants, and sponsorships.Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, grant makers, and corporate partners to secure multi-year funding commitments.Research and identify prospective donors, preparing tailored proposals and presentations.Track and manage all fundraising activities, including donor acknowledgments, reporting, and stewardship plans.Work collaboratively with the CEO and Board of Directors to align fundraising strategies with organizational goals.Meet pre-determined annual fundraising quota by identifying, cultivating and securing funding from diverse sources including foundations, corporate sponsorships, individual donors and grant opportunities.
Volunteer Program Development:
Design and implement a corporate volunteer program to engage employees from partner organizations in supporting NJ 211's services.Establish partnerships with corporations to offer employee engagement opportunities, such as volunteering time to perform select 211 services or representing NJ 211 at community outreach events.Manage recruitment, onboarding, and coordination of volunteers, ensuring alignment with organizational needs.Marketing and Communications:
Create and execute marketing plans for NJ 211's newly developed services and products, increasing brand visibility and outreach.Oversee the organization's press and public relations efforts, managing media relations, press releases, and external communications.Work closely with Director of Community Engagement to develop storytelling strategies that effectively communicate NJ 211's impact to various stakeholders.Collaborate with internal teams to produce engaging content for websites, social media, and newsletters.Strategic Planning and Leadership:
Member of the leadership team collaborating to set organizational goals, policies and metrics for success.Work closely with the CEO and leadership team to align fundraising, marketing, and communication strategies with organizational priorities.Provide regular reports on fundraising progress and projections to the CEO and Board of Directors Resource Development Committee.Represent NJ 211 at conferences, community events, and donor/corporate meetings as a key spokesperson.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.Minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising, development, or a related role, preferably within a nonprofit setting.Proven track record of securing significant non-government funding through foundations, grants, and corporate sponsorships.Experience developing and managing corporate volunteer programs.Strong marketing, public relations, and communication skills.Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience managing teams and leading cross-functional initiatives.Excellent relationship-building and networking skills with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.Knowledge of fundraising software and CRM systems is preferred.Strategic thinker with the ability to align development strategies with organizational goals.Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including proposal writing and presentation abilities.Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines.Creative in approaching new funding opportunities and designing presentationsAbility to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.Passion for NJ 211's mission and a commitment to making a difference in the community.

NJ 211 is a disaster response organization working in partnership with the state emergency operation center. This requires all staff to be available during times of emergency, to work beyond normal hours and/or flexible hours to meet needs.
FSLA: This position is Exempt. This position can be a hybrid position working a minimum of 2 days a week in the office. Will require work on the weekends and evenings.
The salary range is $85,000-$95,000.

Temporary staff must be with the organization for six months in order to be considered for regular full time employment within the organization.
