Position Summary:
The Safety Manager will oversee team member and guest safety and risk mitigation efforts at Grand Canyon Resort Corporation. This position will be responsible to identify, establish, and maintain an effective safety program which will minimize accidents, injuries, and other risks. Responsible for providing training and recommendations in relation to safety and risk assessment/mitigation based on analysis of corporate and industry trends. This position is expected to develop and maintain a department that promotes an employee oriented, high-performance culture which emphasizes involvement, efficiency, and a positive & productive working environment. The individual in this roll will act as a Hualapai ambassador and in the best interests of the Hualapai Tribe at all times.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Ensure facilities and working conditions are safe for team members and the general public under current laws, regulations, and requirements.
Identify safety hazards and establish procedures and policies to maintain safe conditions.
Collaborate with GCRC leadership to identify and quantify the organization’s exposures to accidental loss in order to eliminate and/or minimize losses to GCRC. Recommend loss prevention programs.
Conduct ongoing inspections of all GCRC facilities to ensure compliance, and make recommendations to leadership to correct items that might be perceived as safety risks.
Work with Human Resources to review workers compensation claims to determine if any changes need to be made to procedures or facilities.
Work with department and corporate leadership at each facility to prepare comprehensive written disaster and business continuity plans. Ensure critical services are included in the plans, and that plans are effectively communicated to all team members.
Ensure Grand Canyon West, Hualapai River Runners, and Hualapai Lodge/Market/DCR plans and procedures address customer and team member safety.
Ensure proper health, safety, and sanitation processes are in place and being followed for the safety of all guests and team members.
Ensure that all guest related issues are resolved promptly while maintaining a high degree of tactfulness and respect for the other party.
Promote a team environment and assist co workers in handling issues or difficult or unhappy guests, both internal and external.
Ensure that all communications are shared with team members in a timely and accurate manner, as appropriate.
Keep the Director of HR apprised of all issues and concerns.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Must maintain comprehensive knowledge of all health and safety standards in the industry.
Knowledge and understanding of the principles and applications of loss prevention.
Demonstrated ability to physically complete and have the knowledge to perform safety and compliance reviews on-site at all business locations.
Demonstrated ability to read and understand all health and safety related laws, rules, and regulations and apply them at GCRC.
Ability to proactively identify potential issues, risks, or hazards, and demonstrate resourcefulness in the ability to find and implement solutions.
Ability and knowledge to continuously monitor the conditions of all business operations facilities, equipment and materials.
Demonstrated ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner and handle escalated issues or team members/guests that are not happy. Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
Demonstrated ability to participate in a team environment, multi-task efficiently and maintain positive working relationships. Excellent organizational skills.
Knowledge of Grand Canyon West locations and operations, Hualapai River Running and Hualapai history and culture.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, business administration, or another related field, required.
Minimum of five (5) years leadership experience as the most senior person in a safety / risk management department, at an organization with multiple business locations and a diverse offering of resort/tourism related activities, required.
In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, minimum ten (10) years leadership experience as the most senior person in a safety / risk management department, at an organization with multiple business locations and a diverse offering of resort/tourism related activities, required.
Ability to work effectively and efficiently both as an individual and as part of a team.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Experience working for a Tribal entity, preferred.
Preference given to Hualapai Tribal members.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the team member is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, push, pull, bend for extended periods; reach with hands and arms; talk and listen on a regular basis.
The Team Member must be able to concentrate for prolonged periods.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
The Team Member must be able to communicate effectively in person or using telecommunications equipment.
Must have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, touch-screen display, telephone, and calculator.
Frequently lift and/or move up to 30 lbs.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be able to provide authorization to work in the United States.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must possess a valid drivers license with a clean driving record, and be able to obtain approval to operate a company vehicle.
Must comply with the GCRC Team Member Handbook, internal policies and procedures, and all rules and regulations set within GCRC and the Tribe.
Working Conditions:
Work environment will be an indoor restaurant and office setting, with occasional assignments in outdoor environments in multiple business locations. This will involve exposure to extreme weather conditions including, but not limited to: heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow. Occasional travel (local and statewide) for meetings, assignments, and regular job tasks. Extended and irregular hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays may be needed on occasion to meet business needs. Must be able to perform under pressure and work under stressful conditions. May be exposed to the risks associated in attempting to resolve issues with irate Team Members, both current and former.
