Provides leadership, direction, and expertise in the Safety and Security Department and assigned schools. Plans, directs, and controls all assigned operations and tactical functions associated with School Security and the Safety and Emergency Management section. Directs safety and emergency management for all schools, buildings, staff, and students within the District. Directs and leads administrative functions associated with the Safety and Security Department and 24/7 emergency response programs.35% Responsibilities:
Leads and directs security staff assigned at schools and responding to school incidents, including during off-shift hours as required.Assigns and reviews work, evaluates performance, provides recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, performance improvement plans, and terminations, and develops and provides staff training.Researches best practices and develops Safety and Security Operations Manual procedures and protocols.Promotes a safe and secure environment for staff and students.Sensitively engages in contact with members of the school community who may be hostile, emotional, unstable, or physically or mentally distraught.15% Responsibilities:
Responds to critical incidents district-wide, intervening and easing conflict among individuals and/or groups.Develops district and school operation orders.Writes and coordinates development of crisis and operational manuals.15% Responsibilities:
Conducts and coordinates investigations regarding criminal, civil, or administrative matters, maintaining a high level of confidentiality for both ongoing and closed investigations.May use video surveillance equipment.Monitors and analyzes incident reports to determine patterns and provides reports to manager.10% Responsibilities:
Provides direction and leadership in the Safety and Security Department.Develops and recommends operational goals and objectives that are consistent with District Strategic Plan, District Policies, state and federal laws.Leads interdepartmental collaborations with the School Threat Assessment Team, school support services, schools, and other staff.Facilitates group discussions and communicates clearly and sensitively to a diverse audience.5% Responsibilities:
Advises and consults with Principals, Program Managers, and staff to provide school security support.Acts as liaison with staff members throughout the divisions and advises administrators and staff regarding security issues identified at a particular location and for district-wide issues.May represent the District on potentially sensitive or controversial matters.5% Responsibilities:
Collaborates with Seattle Police Department and City Crime Councils.Provides technical assistance to schools and security staff to prevent, prepare, respond, and recover from incidents of youth and gang violence.Transports illegal drugs and weapons to the evidence safe, and maintains chain of evidence including investigation reports and records of all materials placed in the evidence safe in compliance with applicable regulations.5% Responsibilities:
Maintains emergency communications within the department.Develops and coordinates drills for operational readiness for Security Specialists.Makes recommendations regarding new and replacement equipment purchases.5% Responsibilities:
Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars to maintain current knowledge of assigned areas.Monitors current research, trends, issues, and practices, and communicates findings as appropriate.5% Responsibilities:
Assumes the responsibilities of the Assistant Manager of Safety and Security during Assistant Manager's absence or unavailability as specified.

May perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Five to eight (5-8) years of experience in safety program management, crisis intervention or security management, business administration or other applicable fields; Bachelor's degree in Juvenile Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Science, Education, or Emergency Management; Associate Degree plus two (2) additional years or four additional years of qualifying work experience may substitute for Bachelor's degree requirement; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work will be considered.
DESIRED CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
FEMA Course Certificates:National Incident Management (IS-700) certificate, ICS (IS-100) certificate, School Emergency Management (IS-362); Leadership and Influence (IS-240); valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility, current first aid and CPR certificates.
