Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has an opportunity for a detail-oriented Senior Accountant for Accounts Receivable. The Senior Accountant performs complex data analysis and reconciliations across multiple systems, develops queries, recommends process improvement, and prepares audit workpapers. The Senior Accountant serves as a team lead for four (4) accounting professionals, reviewing others' work, and providing constructive feedback. The ideal candidate has a strong working knowledge of GAAP and interprets and applies accounting policies, regulations, and best practices to their work. This position will report to the Accounts Receivable Manager.

Responsibilities:

Perform complex reconciliations from general ledger to multiple side systems, tracing root cause of issues.Design complex accounting reports/statements/schedules/queries. Produce documentation needed for audits or requests.Train, review, and approve the work of two (2) Accountants and two (2) Accounting Technicians.Partner with internal and external customers to resolve difficult billing or accounting issues.Provide professional consultation and be able to clearly explain relevant accounts receivable processes, system processes, interpreting and applying accounting policies, GAAP, and internal controls.Understand the functions within the financial system (PeopleSoft) and side systems.Develop and review accounts receivable procedures for existing and new tasks related to billing, month-end close, and reconciliations.Ensure successful monthly and year-end AR close. Compile and ensure accuracy of accruals and create journal entries.Use Excel in daily work.

Experience:

Three (3) years professional experience in general or governmental accounting (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field (requires satisfactory completion of at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter credit units in accounting with no substitution allowed).

Desired Qualifications:

Possess strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), citywide accounting policies, and internal controls.Possession of the CPA a plus.Subject matter expertise in Peoplesoft and Paradigm billing systems or other large ERP financial systems. Experience in pulling and manipulating queries.Experience performing detailed aging report analysis, collections, and recovery.Experience leading and mentoring other accountants.Self-starter. Demonstrated ability to jump into complex accounting problems with little direction and work to solve them.Strong attention to detail, strong analytical and research skills.Ability to handle multiple priorities and takes pride in the accuracy, quality, and completeness of work.Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across multiple departments and workgroups and work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving a diverse customer base.Proven experience with complex system implementation and upgrades.Strong communication skills (both verbal and written). Ability to clearly communicate accounting information in non-technical terms.Strong experience with complex Excel functions.

Workplace Environment/Telework Expectation:

This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Starting November 4, 2024, City employees will have the option to work remotely two days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is: $44.61 - $51.95 per hour.
