Education and Experience:
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in urban or regional planning, public administration, architecture, or a related field.
Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible administrative government experience in planning, building, housing, or a related field.
Five years of management experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
Skills/Abilities:
Lead the $200M planned investment in the redevelopment of the City’s downtown over the next 5-7 years through a new Downtown Revitalization Specific Plan.
Partner with the Director of Economic Development to negotiate the best possible urban design and community benefits as you work with our development industry partners.
Be a working Director. Support your team by both empowering your staff with authority and responsibility to do great work, and also by being hands-on in the development process where your expertise and skill can make the biggest difference.
Be successful in the nuts and bolts of Department Head life – managing budgets, handling contract services, coaching the team and handling personnel matters, making great presentations, and building working relationships with your fellow Directors and City Management folks.

The Planning and Development Director will oversee planning, building, land development engineering, code compliance, building inspections, and utility inspections. The Department has a staff of 60 and an annual budget of $9.4 million.
