This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the Flagstaff Mountain campus with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

This position is posted as Director, Office of Inclusion which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Director, Student Life Experience.

Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required.

Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President Student Affairs: Inclusive Student Mentoring & Success, the Director has overall responsibility for the activities, programs, and operations of the Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA Student Services (IMQ) at Northern Arizona University (NAU). NAU is a Hispanic Serving Institution and a First Gen Forward Champion Campus.

IMQ serves all students focusing on gender identity, sexual orientation, and racially & ethnically diverse populations. Through academic support, holistic guidance, identity development, 1:1 mentoring, programming, and partnerships across campus, IMQ advocates for students to become the best versions of themselves. IMQ offers resources and support to empower students to become self-sufficient and reach their goals.

The Director of IMQ must be a collaborative leader, responsible for directing the staff in the development and delivery of programs and services designed specifically to achieve persistence and graduation rates equal to or above the overall university average for students who have been historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education.

Leadership, Supervision, and Strategic Planning - 50%

Establishes, in consultation with supervisor and staff, the overall department vision, goals, objectives, and plans consistent with the mission of the division and the university.

Initiates and participates in overall program development and assessment and organizes resources to achieve goals.

Provides formative and summative evaluation of departmental and programmatic effectiveness.

Provides oversight for program operations to ensure program goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with priorities, as well as time and funding limitations.

Directs the overall recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of two Assistant Directors, two Coordinators, two Graduate Assistants and thirteen student Inclusion & Diversity Scholars.

Provides direct service to individual students and coordinates overall departmental efforts to increase the number of genders, sexual, racially, and ethnically diverse students served by the IMQ to have a positive impact on persistence and graduation.

Demonstrates a commitment to equity, inclusion, and the university’s affirmative action plan.

Contributes as a strategic member of the Student Affairs division. Represents the department on various division and university committees. Participates in retention initiatives and program planning teams.

Programming and Strategic Partnerships - 25%

In cooperation with the Office for Indigenous Student Success and other culturally diverse student organizations, develops, promotes, and implements a comprehensive array of educational, academic, cultural and social programs and services for students including cultural heritage weeks.

Work on an ongoing basis with various campus partners departments such as: Admissions, Financial Aid, Health Promotions, Residence Life, Gateway Advising, Career Planning & Placement and various academic colleges/departments who focus on recruitment, retention, and the success of underrepresented students.

Program Assessment and Fiduciary Responsibility - 20%

Provides reports and recommendations on the activities of the department. Compiles reports for presentations to campus and other stakeholders.

Manage the outcomes assessment and documentation of Inclusion & Diversity Scholar Peer Mentoring student success initiatives.

Prepares, monitors, and maintains oversight of department budgets. Provides financial and statistical reports, projections, and recommendations as needed. Seeks outside grant funding to support department initiatives.

Other - 5%

Represents the department or work unit on various committees, work groups and employee forums.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

Five years’ experience working with students in higher education OR a combination of work experience and education and/or student mentoring programming and/or student success programming, which includes three years supervising and coordinating the work of others.

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree.

Experience in higher education student services with a focus on student retention and success, particularly students from the southwest region of the US, students who have been historically underrepresented in higher education and LGBTQIA students.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Experience working with students from various gender identities, sexual orientations, racial and ethnically diverse backgrounds in a higher education setting.

Ability to communicate effectively to students, prospective students, and their families.

Experience developing, managing, and assessing student service programs.

Excellent supervisory, organization, and training skills including conflict resolution.

Experience with fiscal management and budget oversight, including grant-funded programs.

Effective written and oral communication, as well as presentation skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team.

Experience developing strong working relationships and collaborating with campus community and stakeholders.

Ability to work a varied work schedule with flexible hours to participate in evening and weekend events as necessary.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Salary

Anticipated salary range is $85,000 - $90,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents.
