School Directors serve five year terms and may be reappointed for multiple terms, subject to UNC Board Policy: 3-3-1101.
The Director serves as the primary academic and administrative officer of the School of Special Education, reporting to the Dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. The Director will provide a forward-looking vision and proactive leadership in the areas of accountability, transparency, and collaboration as well as principled administrative guidance and advocacy for shared governance and the mission of the School, College, and University. The Director is responsible to proactively move the School forward towards a more socially just, equitable, and diverse environment, which includes curriculum, hiring, and programmatic decisions.
Job Duties:
The Director is responsible for workload/scheduling, curriculum, and student concerns. The Director advocates for students, faculty, and staff to the rest of the University and communicates University goals and concerns positively to the School. The Director sets a tone and creates a positive environment to encourage collaboration, creative engagement, and productive work in the School. The Director has managerial and leadership responsibilities for the School’s operation, including development and implementation of goals and objectives, faculty and staff review and development, supervision, strategic and programmatic oversight.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD/EdD in Special Education or closely related fieldFull or advanced Associate Professor status
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong record of leadership in a higher education setting
Demonstrated excellence in research and teaching
Commitment to and experience in working with diverse populations
Proven record of facilitating community partnerships
Experience with grant writing
The School of Special Education offers a comprehensive array of degrees, including seven graduate degree/licensure programs recognized by U.S. News & World Report as “best online graduate programs”, a nationally recognized Ph.D. program, two graduate certificate programs, and two undergraduate degree/licensure program.

Compensation for School Directors includes an annual administrative stipend based on filled faculty positions; this stipend varies from year to year, depending upon the number of full-time faculty within the school

Employees at UNC receive sick leave, and other leave options may be available based on position. Full-time employees are eligible to receive tuition waiver benefits, as well as dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed at 0.5 FTE or above are eligible for undergraduate dependent tuition grants of up to 50%. These tuition grants will cover in-state tuition charges. Further requirements may exist. Other benefits may be available based on position.
