The Department of Student Affairs (DSA) is a forward-thinking student success operation committed to its role as the leading custodial unit guiding the student experience at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). This position exists to coordinate and case manage for the University’s behavioral intervention team and provide support for the case management function at the University. This position will provide leadership to the general operations of the Student Outreach and Case Management unit within the Dean of Students Office, carry a case load of students, and supervise/train the case management staff to support the personal and academic success of students through coordinated needs assessment and referrals. This position engages with students experiencing serious mental health concerns to assess ongoing issues, monitor progress, confirm treatment plans from service providers, identify referral sources, and communicate with parents/families and other supports. This position will focus on minimizing potential harm to the individual student, their academic career, and the University community. This position is designed as a Responsible Employee under Title IX and a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act.
Job Duties:
Serves as a case manager for students who pose a risk of harm to self-and/or others, as part of the University CARE Team. The CARE Team is a cross-functional group responsible for identifying, tracking, and making recommendations for interventions to support at-risk students and critical incident response. The CARE Team includes representatives from the UNC Police Department, Academic Affairs, Dean of Students, University Counseling Center, and Housing and Residential Education, among others.
Seek assistance from the above entities in situations where there is a concern for the student's immediate safety or the safety of others.
Provide outreach, communication, and staffing of cases involving students in distress and those in need of support in navigating University or community resources.
Track student data and maintain accurate case management records.
Communicate with faculty, staff, parents, families, or designated emergency contacts regarding significant student mental health emergencies (including threats to self or others, hospitalizations, suicide attempts, etc.) to help facilitate a successful return to campus when issues are appropriately resolved.
Meet with the student to determine appropriate referrals and support needed.
Consult regularly with the various departments on campus regarding services, access, and care for students of concern, particularly the University Counseling Center, Disability Resource Center, and UNC Police Department.
Manage major cases with multiple parties and perspectives without bias.
Work with campus partners to discuss overlapping cases as they intersect with Title IX, Housing, and/or other areas of campus operations.
Utilize Maxient database for case management and tracking.
Leadership and Supervision (20% - Essential):
Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate full-time Case Managers.
Implement strategic vision for Student Outreach and Case Management in alignment with Dean of Students Office and institutional priorities as well as the Student Affairs strategic plan and curriculum.
Provide institutional leadership for case management support on campus.
Develop and propose innovative procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of non-clinical case management.
Create systems to gather and maintain accurate data and case files related to student concerns using Maxient.
With the Dean of Students Specialist, run Maxient analytic data and audit cases to support unit leadership and data/assessment needs.
Stay apprised of federal, state, and local laws that inform behavioral intervention practices.
Organize staff and team development, facilitate professional opportunities to enhance individual and collective understanding of case management and behavioral intervention.
Education and Outreach (10% - Essential):
Support student academic success through maintaining collaborative relationships with university partners. Key collaborators include staff in the Department of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Student Academic Success, including but not limited to SOAR, academic advisors, Bear Central, the Disability Resource Center, and the Counseling Center. This could include assisting students to develop plans for catching up on missed academic work, adjusting an academic course load, facilitating a university withdrawal, and helping a student plan for a successful departure and/or return to the academic environment after a crisis.
Create and deliver outreach, education, and resources. Coordinate and deliver educational resources and ongoing development opportunities for students, faculty, and staff, and families regarding CARE Team, case management, crisis response, and working with individuals in distress.
Provide leadership and training related to helping skills, effective referrals, and critical incident response to others on campus staff who provide case management and/or case management-like functions.
Other Duties (10% - Essential):
Fulfill other duties and committee work on behalf of the Dean of Students Office.
Serve in an on-call rotation on behalf of the Dean of Students Office.
Direct and evaluate crisis response if necessary; support on-call staff after hours when needed; participate in emergency planning and training.
Stay informed regarding case management issues locally and nationally.
Track and assess case trends through the Maxient database of the campus-wide case management process.
Present assessments/trends analysis/data to campus personnel as requested.
Complete other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Student Development, such as advising student organizations, assisting with cross-campus committees, or other intermittent team needs.
Maintain regular office hours, assist with Dean of Students Office phone calls and office work as needed, and attend staff meetings.
Support student success through maintaining collaborative relationships with university partners, local law enforcement agencies, and mental health facilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Minimum qualifications include an earned Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of experience.
Preferred qualifications include an earned Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education administration, counseling, or behavioral/social science discipline.
Experience:
Minimum:
Prior work experience in case management, mental health, crisis response, substance abuse, or higher education/student affairs required.
Prior experience producing high-quality written communication.
Preferred:
Prior experience in a Dean of Students Office or related functional area of a university.
Experience in case and records management.
Experience supervising full-time staff.
Prior experience working cooperatively with others in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Demonstrated knowledge about, and skilled in, developmental, psychological and mental health issues of the college student population.
Demonstrated knowledge of and relevant ability to work with culturally diverse communities and populations.
Prior experience in crisis management/risk assessment preferred.
Prior experience with Maxient system.
