The Snow Safety Director is responsible for designing, implementing and managing theAvalanche Program and Snow Safety team to ensure the safety of employees and guests withinthe resort's operational areas, and surrounding terrain.
This position may require additional work outside of normal operating hours to provide an AMand PM forecast. Compensation will be given for time spent on AM & PM forecasting while notat the resort. Overtime to be given after 40hrs/wk. All other Nordic Valley employee perks apply.When proven necessary for resort operations, continuing education courses such as UACPROSAW, ISSW, Avy Rescue, Pro 2 etc. may be required. Nordic Valley will cover theemployees' hours spent while attending these courses. This benefit is in the spirit of theemployee returning each winter with a mindset of overall improvement, maintaining operationsat the highest level, and improving the safety of employees and patrons.
Essential Job FunctionsDevelop, organize, train and manage Snow Safety Team including mitigation scheduling,and performance managementGive input on performance evaluations for all ski patrollers who participate in SnowSafety workResponsible for avalanche rescue training and avalanche mitigation procedures.Assess for risk and identify avalanche hazards on a daily basis to ensure the safe andtimely opening of terrain; organize avalanche mitigation when necessaryOversee and maintain run closures, backcountry gates, and the ski area boundaryEstablish and maintain weather monitoring equipment and snow study plots; Monitorweather, snowpack and terrain; maintain records of weather and mitigation strategies;forecast avalanche problems/hazardOversee Snow Safety budget and supplies including managing explosives in accordancewith Federal and State guidelinesOversee future expansions into avalanche terrain and future programs relating to snowsafety and the NVSP.Develop and maintain avalanche response and SAR protocols and stay abreast ofindustry standards and best practices.Oversee the training of the Patrol in timely and efficient Partner Rescue techniques.Maintain positive working relationship with all departments; communicate avalancheobservations and trends with industry peers.Seek opportunities to enhance guest experiences, and initiate guest contact.Other patrol duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age or olderHigh School Diploma or high school equivalent requiredPrevious snow safety experience requiredAbility to ski all terrain in all snow/weather conditions for extended periods requiredAvy Pro 1 or equivalent or higherCurrent CPR certification requiredMinimum Outdoor Emergency Care or EMT required

Supervision given : Exercises direct supervision over Snow Safety staff. Responsibilitiesinclude, but are not limited to, frequent and detailed review of work, training, planning,assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees;addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Supervision received : Works under the supervision of the Ski Patrol Director. Receivesguidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for establishingstrategic methods to attain them. The Snow Safety Director may formulate policies but does nothave final authority for approval. Review of work is not detailed and emphasizesaccomplishment of broad work objectives, rather than specific assignments.
