Education
Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
Master’s degree in business, Healthcare Administration, or Nursing a plus
Certified Emergency Nursing (CEN)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS)
Acute Critical Care Nursing Certification (CCRN) preferred
Experience / Qualifications
5-7 years of Emergency Department Leadership experience preferred
Strong operational background in the Emergency Department setting
Proven labor, productivity, and financial management success
Ability to delegate daily operations and provide strategic vision for department
Strong physician relationship skills
Track record of improving and maintaining patient satisfaction scores
Experience going through a remodel/renovation/construction is a plus
Position Summary Under the supervision of the COO/CNO, the Nursing Director for the Emergency Department is accountable for the overall operation of the Emergency Department (Adult and Pediatrics). The Nursing Director is part of the hospital clinical leadership team and assists with the organization, direction, management, and evaluation of patient care services for Emergency Service areas. The role is responsible for the clinical practice of nursing and the delivery of quality patient care to patients of all ages.
Duties also include contributing to the maintenance of evidence-based standards through professional activities, including benchmarking, monitoring of literature and supporting research, and guiding progress towards advancement and attainment of defined goals for the hospital and the Nursing Department.
Key Responsibilities
Plans, directs, and coordinates all operational activities for Emergency Departments.
Develops policies and procedures as well as the quality improvement program for the dept.
Ensures unit is appropriately staffed by hiring and retaining competent staff.
Contributes to the public's perception of the hospital.
Responsible for maintaining acceptable turnover in areas of responsibility.
Responsible for positive employee engagement and appropriate communication with staff as well as providers.
Responsible for quality and performance improvement activities in department.
Provides triage and treatment to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients seeking emergency care.
Provides oversight, direction, and management for specified areas(s) encompassing 24/7 responsibility and scope of services.
Responsible for the overall planning, organizing, implementing, and control of Emergency Services to promote the effective and efficient utilization of personnel.
Directs patient care duties of professional and non-professional personnel, supervises and evaluates work performance to ensure optimal patient care.
Interacts with the physicians, allied health providers, hospital staff, outside agencies, patients, and patients’ families/significant other(s) to provide comprehensive care.
Works both independently and interdependently with internal and external customers to accomplish efficient, cost-effective, quality patient care.
Supports and promotes the vision, mission, values, and strategic plans of the facility.
Establishes and administers policies and procedures in cooperation with other department heads and administrative personnel.
Knowledge and skill in professional nursing theory and practice, including physiological principles involved in the care of emergency and critical patients, principles of teaching and learning, research quality assurance.
Collaborates with local EMS and disaster planning.
Develops the capital and operating budgets.
Monitors cost of salaries and supplies.
Looks for opportunities to reduce cost and increase efficiency.
Identifies opportunities for growth and revenue enhancement.
Uses benchmark data to trend and improve performance.
Effectively uses and role models current management techniques and theories, encouraging the decision-making skills of staff members and providing insight and leadership in complex situations.
Supervises the development of service policies, procedures, and operating guidelines. Ensures that information is disseminated to staff is monitored for effectiveness and changed as needed.
Understands and enforces all hospital and personnel policies and procedures.
Lead and/or serve on hospital and Patient Care Services committees, teams, and work groups as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
