Posting Summary:
Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor (business title, Academic Advisor). Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Recruitment and Community Engagement, this Student Counselor provides academic advising and counseling to undergraduate students.
This position is responsible for the following:Counsels assigned caseload of Newark College of Arts and Sciences (NCAS) and University College-Newark (UC-N) students, including facilitating declaration of major, progress toward graduation, and successful career and/or professional development for them.Coordinates the Peer Advisor program.Works with OAS recruitment and community engagement team to assist with the coordination, development, and facilitation of initiatives targeting prospective and incoming students as well as currently enrolled undergraduate students.Contributes to school-to-school transfers, re-enrollment, commencement activities, major/minor fairs, and other special events.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in student counseling, college student personnel, psychology, social work, education, higher education administration, or a related field and two years relevant experience in academic counseling/advisement; or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of first year and probation student populations and programs, student development and counseling theories and applications, and workshop design and presentation.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Excellent written and oral communication skillsStrong organizational skillsAbility to handle and prioritize multiple tasksInteract successfully and confidentially with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the University communityStrong computer literacy, including use of databasesExcellent problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to multitask and function autonomously with limited supervisionWork in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer-service focused environment
Preferred Qualifications:Master's degreeExperience in a university or other educational setting with experience in program development and conducting workshops for diverse populationsKnowledge of overseeing student leaders and peer advisor programs.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:OAS is a fast-paced, deadline-driven, stakeholder-focused environmentResponsibilities will include attendance at and participation in evening and weekend activities as needed
