Work Days/Hours (Other than Standard) : The role involves evening and weekend work, especially during high-profile events or emergencies, and will occasionally require night duty. The position requires a balance of office work and being present at various campus locations. Additionally, the Associate Director must have the ability to be on campus with very short notice as needed.

Position Focus:

Based in the Office of the Secretary and Vice President for University Life (OSVPUL), the Associate Director for University Life provides consistent, high-quality responses and operational support for free expression/peaceable assembly, student crisis and emergencies, and other broad cross-cutting student/university life issues. The Associate Director partners with members of Yale Public Safety and serves as an intermediary during protests and high-profile events, leveraging their diverse background to foster positive relationships and manage conflicts. Key duties include providing on-site logistical support during protests, offering policy guidance, and supporting student safety initiatives.

Essential Duties :

Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas.

Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility.

Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives.

Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility.

Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies.

Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience : Bachelor’s Degree in related field and five years of demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and related demonstrated experience.

Required Skills/Abilities :

Familiarity with university environments and student affairs is strongly preferred.

Proven experience in conflict resolution, mediation, and de-escalation techniques.

Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively with various stakeholders. Cultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations.

Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities. Exceptional verbal and written communication. Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Commitment to upholding high ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills : Degree in field such as student affairs, social sciences, counseling, or related disciplines. Demonstrated work experience in a relevant role such as academic administration, social work, counseling, community organizing, community policing, nonprofit work, or conflict resolution.
