NAGPRA Program Manager – The University of Alabama Museums
The University of Alabama seeks a full-time NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) Program Manager within The University of Alabama Museums, a museum system consisting of five public museums, including Moundville Archaeological Park, one of the most significant Native American heritage sites in the nation. UA Museums also includes a central Department of Museum Research and Collections, and the UA Office of Archaeological Research. The University cares for the remains of a significant number of Native American ancestors and cultural artifacts and is committed to full compliance with NAGPRA. This position will manage the University’s NAGPRA program ensuring compliance through consultations, repatriations, and other activities. The position will report to the Executive Director of UA Museums.Required Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies or related field and experience in identifying, analyzing, organizing, and managing Native American artifacts, human remains, and associated funerary objects. Thorough knowledge of NAGPRA law and procedures for compliance, consultation and project management, and prior experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders (i.e. descendant communities, university faculty, staff, students, legal counsel, and government staff). Prior experience participating in NAGPRA consultation. Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.Duties and Responsibilities:Coordinates compliance, consultations, repatriations, and other activities associated with ensuring NAGPRA compliance.Represents the position of The University in formal consultations with federally recognized tribes, federal agencies, and non-federal government agencies and institutions.Coordinates inventory and curation of remains and objects subject to NAGPRA.Oversees the management and care of human remains and objects in culturally sensitive ways and prepares them for repatriation.Establishes and maintains relationships with tribal communities and serves as an institutional point of contact for Native American ancestral remains and objects.Drafts notices for submission to the Federal Register and files required documentation with National NAGPRA staff.Develops and submits grant proposals and funding requests to support NAGPRA activities.Conducts in-depth cultural affiliation research and writes cultural affiliation reports.Works with federally recognized tribal representatives to determine whether or not human remains and/or funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony can be culturally affiliated with tribal groups.Application Deadline:
