NAGPRA Program Manager – Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

The Peabody Museum seeks a Program Manager/NAGPRA to supervise departmental staff and support overseeing compliance, consultations, repatriations, and other activities associated with ensuring the Museum’s fulfillment of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The Program Manager will play a key role in managing, tracking, and evaluating the progress of core projects and initiatives of the department. The position will work closely with the Director of NAGPRA on a range of matters critical to the Peabody’s strategic plan, especially around the areas of ethical stewardship and community collaboration.Position DescriptionSupervise Regional Coordinators and Curatorial Assistants. Responsibilities may include hiring and training, planning and assigning work, conducting performance appraisals, addressing performance issues, and resolving concerns.Manage, monitor, refine, and evaluate processes and initiatives managed in the NAGPRA Office; collaborate with colleagues to develop project objectives, plans, and proposals; identify project responsibilities, sequence, and stages of the project.Support the development, launch, and internal alignment of NAGPRA’s priorities including project management, communications and outreach, status reporting, and documentation.Respond to inquiries about collections subject to NAGPRA in writing, by telephone, or during visits and according to NAGPRA implementation requirements.Coordinate internal workflow between the NAGPRA team and the Collections Division for selected NAGPRA implementation tasks including communication between departments.Compile and review cultural affiliation documents and inventories, prepare Federal notices and communications.Work with museum staff to ensure that NAGPRA records are complete, well-maintained, and up to date including researching records to enhance documentation of NAGPRA-relevant collections. Conduct and coordinate consultation, inventory research, and report production. Create materials required for NAGPRA implementation and committees. Compile and update data on NAGPRA implementation, including documenting consultations and correspondence records and outcomes.Assist the Director of NAGPRA to report on NAGPRA implementation.Coordinate with the Collections Division and tribal representatives to facilitate the use of the collection for NAGPRA implementation, including consultation and physical transfer of collections under NAGPRA.Perform other duties as required.Basic QualificationsBachelor’s degree in a related field.Five plus years of related experience, including supervising permanent staff and project/program management involving multiple stakeholders.Position RequirementsDemonstrated knowledge and direct experience with NAGPRA compliance procedures.Experience conducting consultations with Native American Tribes; strong interpersonal skills in working with diverse communities.Work with sensitive collections and content, with attentiveness to University and cultural protocols.Demonstrated experience with collection management best practices and standards and work with archaeological collections and associated archival records.Demonstrated computer proficiency with museum collections databases with knowledge of The Museum System (TMS) desirable.Demonstrated experience in successful project management, meeting deadlines, and working collaboratively as part of a team of museum professionals.Experience supervising permanent staff.Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.About the Peabody MuseumThe Peabody Museum is situated on the ancestral and traditional land of the Massachusett people.
