Project Engineer-FEA & Blast Specialist

American Bureau of Shipping, San Antonio, Texas, United States, 78208

As a Project Engineer in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards, you will be responsible for the activities related to an assigned organizational element, program, project, or task. You will normally plan, conduct, and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination.

What You Will Do:

Perform dynamic analysis and detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) calculations of structures subjected to blast, seismic and wind loads.

Independently develop analytical models using FEA software packages to solve complex dynamic analysis problems.

Conduct dynamic analysis and design of structures and equipment to resist blast loads from high explosives, vapor cloud explosions, and bursting pressure vessels.

Perform non-linear, transient dynamic analysis of concrete and steel structures as well as other advanced materials using Anti-terrorism/Force protection (AT/FP).

Execute blast resistant structural analysis and design (i.e., conceptual and final) of diverse facilities including control rooms, warehouses, I&E shops, maintenance shops and administration facilities in support of Facility Siting Studies (FSS), Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), and protective containment structures.

Perform site inspections to collect structural data.

Support explosion incident investigations by surveying structural damage to determine the magnitude of explosion blast loads, directional indicator mapping to determine explosion sources, evidence collection and storage to maintain chain of custody, among other related activities.

Prepare technical reports and calculation documents.

Develop tools for internal use to increase engineers’ efficiency, investigating potential new techniques to design and analyze structures, create dashboards for clients to review results, etc.

Develop positive client relationships on project assignments.

Demonstrated experience communicating complex technical concepts to internal and external stakeholders.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to speak well in group and/or client facing environments.

English language fluency to conduct detailed business and technical communication at a professional level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex or unique engineering problems.

Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.

Should have advanced practical industry related experience.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Working Conditions:

Work will normally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites, or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Work will be non-manual, but the incumbent must be able to walk and climb among equipment and structures. Occasionally may have to lift between 5‒15 pounds.
