*Olympia, Washington – Thurston County*This position is currently eligible for 80% remote work, reporting to the Olympia Office at least once per week.Join our team at the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) as a WDFW Enterprise Network Defense Engineer, where you'll play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and monitoring network threat detection and incident response systems.What to Expect-Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the
Network Defense Engineer
will be responsible for:Solutions Development:Independently responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting WDFW Enterprise network security solutions both on-premises and cloud-hosted, across multiple solutions such as Palo Alto, Juniper, Cisco, NetApp, and ZScaler.Plays a key role in designing and facilitating the ongoing secure connectivity between WDFW networks, the State Government Network (SGN), and cloud-based resources using in depth understanding of routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, EIGRP and MPLS.Works with WDFW staff by designing, supporting, and maintaining centralized monitoring and logging for network, threat detection and incident response service infrastructures.Participates in ‘Tiger Team’ architectural efforts to provide technical solutions to address agency problem sets.Designs, implements, and monitors WDFW network intrusion detection and prevention systems by configuring and managing the Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution using various scripting languages to develop network security baselines and anomaly detection.Develops custom scripts to correlate and analyze network traffic across various SIEM, SolarWinds Orion, DHCP and NAT/PAT logging platforms to perform rogue system detection.Conducts threat intelligence assessments and documentation.Initiates Incident Response Program as required.Leads and mentors a team of Analysts in performing incident response actions appropriate to the nature of the incident.Analyzes network traffic and patterns to determine attack and threat vectors.Isolates systems affected by an incident utilizing network defense tools.Security Review:Conducts project focused risk assessments of WDFW network and IOT devices, develops and implements remediation actions as needed.Reviews network architecture, device configuration, and processes to identify potential security risks, provide recommendations for remediation.For services for which this position is responsible, maintains Plans of Action and Milestones (POAM).Provides input for continuous improvement of the agency Risk Assessment Process.Qualifications:Required Qualifications:Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science or a closely related field
and
seven (7) years of recent IT experience (within the last 10 years) including network configuration, perimeter defense, cloud services, and cybersecurity risk assessment methodologies.Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:Must pass fingerprint and background check due to working with law enforcement and sensitive data.Preferred Qualifications:In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:CISSPCompTIA SEC+Experience working in cloud-based environments such as AWS and Azure.Experience managing a monitoring solution that includes the centralized collection of log file data.Your application must include the following:A completed online application.An up-to-date resume (chronological preferred) showcasing how your qualifications align with the job requirements.A cover letter detailing your interest in the position, your relevant skills and experience, and why you are the ideal candidate.At least three professional references with current contact information.WORKING CONDITIONS:Work Setting, including hazards:
