Olympia, Washington – Thurston CountyServe as an application developer within the Biological Data Systems (BDS) team, supporting WDFW’s mission to sustainably monitor and manage fish, shellfish, and aquatic resources.In this role, you will focus on addressing the needs of the Fish Program's Science and Management divisions by designing, implementing, and maintaining Flutter applications and PostgreSQL databases. You will also develop software tools, applications, and reporting solutions for electronic harvest reporting.What to Expect-Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role:Design, develop, maintain user interface applications for entry and analysis of data:Tasks include Mobile Development

Use Flutter/Dart to develop custom iOS and Android applications.Use SQL and NoSQL technology to persist data.Use Bluetooth (Classic and LE) to integrate with standard and custom hardware solutions.Integrate custom applications with agency MDM system.Write custom Dart wrappers to leverage functionality of native and 3rd party APIs.Write unit tests to prevent bugs and regression in developed software.Integrate mobile applications with agency web services.Use encryption libraries to encrypt/decrypt data at rest.Provide technical expertise and needs assessments to newly proposed projects for funding.

Web Development

Use JavaScript frameworks including but not limited to Angular 6+, Node, Express, Sequelize to develop and maintain web applications.Use standard build tools to bundle, minify, and transpile code to be compatible with browsers that have a relevant usage share.Build and maintain services and handlers for upserting new and updated records received from mobile applications and web servers.

Software Application Development:Build, fix and enhance software applications and evaluate potential hardware and software solutions.Build, fix and enhance mobile or web applications, external hardware connectors for automating data flow.Follow BDS software and technology unit's development and release protocols and standards including code review and versioning.Develop, publish, administer, and maintain map, feature, and geoprocessing services (web services).Help Genetics staff access data by developing complex SQL queries.Data Systems Development:Work under direction of BDS Unit Lead to maintain existing databases and design new databases (SQL and NoSQL) and database user interfaces.Work on existing databases of key Fish Program information and provide support and assistance where needed. Plan and develop designation of new databases and database user interfaces, specifically assist in the development of web-based reports and take a lead role in public data platforms.Develop, code, test, and implement specifications for complex regional, divisional, or multifunctional Fish Program data applications: WaTIX.Provide technical training, documentation, and support the harvest program staff on the use of database and mobile collection applications:Work with harvest program staff to gather requirements, provide recommendations on solutions and create products that meet program and/or project needs.Develop and maintain “user help” documentation on SQL server software, tools, and scripts, geostatistical processes, and hardware.Author and maintain technical documentation for the team including data management protocols and procedures.Working Conditions:Work Setting, including hazards:

Will work in an office environment, with some fieldwork.Schedule:

typically performed in an office setting from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. However, a varied schedule may be required including working Saturday or Sunday and overtime during peak periods, system implementations, maintenance and outages.Travel Requirements:

Occasional in-state day trips and/or overnight travel may be required. Infrequent out-of-state travel may be required (conferences or training). Some travel is required throughout the State to build and support software and hardware solutions for hatchery and field staff.Qualifications:Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree from a four (4) year accredited college or university with major coursework in Computer Science or Information Technology or a related field.ORFour (4) years of equivalent professional IT experience.ANDFour (4) years of demonstrable application development experience that reflects experience in the following areas:Consulting.Business and systems analysis.Designing, programming, directing projects.Providing customer or technical support in information technology.Preferred Qualifications:In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:Experience with distributed source control solutions such as git.Experience with modern application development frameworks such as Angular 2+/nodejs.Experience building mobile applications for Android or iOS.Your application should include the following:A completed online application showcasing how your qualifications align with the job requirements.A cover letter detailing your interest in the position, your relevant skills and experience, and why you are the ideal candidate.At least three professional references with current contact information.Supplemental information:In addition to pay and other special employee programs, there are other benefits that WDFW employees may be eligible for.
