Emergency Vehicle Electronic Maintenance Technician

Position Summary
The City of Elmhurst is seeking a motivated professional to join our team! This position will perform technical level work related to the Installation, repair, and maintenance of electronic equipment. Other functions of this position include the following:
Diagnose, repair, removal and installation and contracting out communications and associated electronic equipment for all City vehicles. Estimates materials, parts, tools and equipment needed for work assignments; orders and picks up materials and supplies from outside vendors as appropriate; prepares cost estimates for job. Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on systems and equipment. Tests and calibrates components and systems; repairs or orders and replaces components, recalibrates systems, and tests equipment prior to placing back into service. Reads diagrams, blueprints, specifications and manuals for installation and repair projects. Maintains and services instrumentation test and repair equipment and hand and power tools; keeps small inventory of frequently used supplies and parts. Maintains inventory of frequently used parts and supplies. Ensures that proper safety precautions are followed. Maintains records of work performed and materials used. Drives City vehicles to work sites and transports materials as required. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment. Available for overtime due to critical vehicle setups and snow. Required Knowledge and Skills
Principles, methods and materials used in the installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of electronic communications and equipment and systems. Design and maintenance of communications systems. Operation of test equipment. FCC guidelines. Practices and techniques related to telecommunications operations. Communication and computer technology. Methods of installation, configuration and repair of mobile radio communications systems and equipment. Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand, power and shop tools and test equipment used in the trade. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work. Shop mathematics. Basic job estimation. Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment. Record keeping principles and practices. Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. Techniques for dealing with staff, in person and over the telephone. Proficient in full installation of emergency lighting integrated lighting, such as Whelan Carbide. Proficient in first responder radio data terminals messaging and communication. Operating and maintaining communications equipment. Designing, laying out and preparing sketches for communications and emergency systems and related installation and maintenance jobs. Estimating necessary materials, parts and equipment to complete assignments. Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools and test equipment related to the work. Maintaining accurate records of work performed Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints. Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
Qualifications
Two years of technical, post-high school level course work in information systems, computer science, or a related field; AND two years of journey-level experience in the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of communications software and hardware.; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
The salary range for this position is $36.13-$50.59 per hour. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance (City contributes annually half the cost of the deductible to employee HSA), tuition reimbursement, paid time off, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
