The Senior Accountant at UTLX On-Site & Mobile Repair Services Group plays a crucial role in the financial operations of the organization, reporting directly to the Manager Financial Reporting. This position is responsible for overseeing and executing accounting transactions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. The Senior Accountant will also be instrumental in maintaining financial records, preparing financial statements, and providing insightful analysis of business performance and operations. This role requires a meticulous approach to financial reporting and a proactive mindset to identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies.
Union Tank Car Company (UTLX)
manufactures, leases, and repairs railcars in North America for railroads and industrial companies. With roots dating back over 125 years, we are part of an operation that owns and leases a diversified portfolio of approximately 120,000 tank cars and 10,000 freight cars, operates two tank car manufacturing facilities, and has a network of more than 110 full-service and mini / mobile repair shops. Essential Functions:
The primary responsibility of this position is to accurately execute and maintain the accounting transactions for UTLX OMR in accordance with US GAAP and Marmon's Standard Practice Instructions (SPIs).The Senior Accountant will be responsible for general ledger entries, conducting expense report audits and purchase card reviews. Additionally, the Senior Accountant reconciles all balance sheet accounts and provides supporting documentation in accordance with Marmon SPIs.Coordinates the collection of accounting input from all sites to ensure month-end reporting deadlines are being met.Participates in several sites inventories each year and is responsible for reviewing counts, answering questions, and preparation of a reconciliation between the count and perpetual record of inventory maintained at the site using a personal computer with custom software.The Senior Accountant also prepares a reconciliation between the book balance of inventory and the value per the physical count for each site.Identifies errors and determines appropriate corrections to costs reported by sites. To perform this function, working closely with site personnel is required. In addition, the Senior Accountant is responsible for analyzing all repair costs.Generates various financial reports reflecting the performance of the group broken down by segment and site.Assists in troubleshooting issues with Inventory Accounting and Accounts Payable.Accumulates and maintains accounting and statistical data on repair sales.Analyzes certain General Ledger accounts to ensure monthly activity in the accounts is proper or that adjustments are made as required.Other duties as assigned.Skills / Specifications:
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.Track record of internal and external customer service focus and continuous improvement approach to the function, consistently meeting or exceeding expectations, preventing errors, and developing and implementing process improvement projects.Knowledge and understanding of accounting principles (GAAP) and related accounting reports and statements.Exceptional computer and spreadsheet applications to access, maintain and report accounting information timely and efficiently.Effective written and verbal communication.Able to learn and understanding of tank car nomenclature is beneficial to successful performance in this position.Education / Experience / Qualifications:
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance with at least 5 years of experience including 3 years of experience reconciling balance sheet accounts and executing month-end closing procedures.The Senior Accountant must also possess basic computer skills and be proficient in spreadsheet software to perform the duties of the position.Experience with a Microsoft-based ERP system is preferredMust reside in the Chicagoland areaWorking Conditions:
Primarily remote working conditions (work from home), but able to work in an office environment.Ability to travel up to 10% of the time (air/land) to company sites and/or corporate office.Ability to work flexible hours when needed, including but not limited to weekend site visits for inventory counts.Ability to use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required for site visits.Ability to occasionally lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to 25 pounds when performing inventory countsAble to work in various temperatures during field visits.Manual dexterity to handle and manipulate items as well as ability to safely navigate uneven walking surfaces and confined spaces or elevated areas.Why Join Our Team?
