IT Systems Administrator III

The Riverside County Fire Department seeks an experienced IT Systems Administrator III to design and implement data computing hardware and software platforms in a public safety environment.The incumbent will design, install, configure, and maintain computer systems, servers, networking, and security equipment; develop software images for field deployment; and create repair procedures and documentation. They will also manage the department’s wide area network (WAN) and MPLS infrastructure, support routers, switches, firewalls, storage area networks, and enterprise storage platforms. The role involves working with state and local agencies to design and implement secure, interoperable networks and systems, as well as developing and maintaining system backup/restore procedures, disaster recovery processes, performance tuning, writing technical documentation, recommending hardware/software solutions, and implementing large-scale datacenter solutions.Competitive candidates must exercise a high degree of independent judgment and provide project oversight to subordinate staff while leading projects. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience performing the full scope of IT system administrator duties.The following experience is highly desired:Fire or public safety experienceWorking with mobile data computersUsing private APNs and private radio data systemsUtilizing remote deployment tools and scripting to manage systemsManaging and supporting enterprise-grade routers, switches, firewalls, storage area networks, enterprise storage platforms, SD-WAN infrastructure, hypervisor platforms, server operating systems, and mobile device management solutionsThis position requires standby duty shifts on a rotational basis for after-hours support, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Telecommuting is not an option; this role requires in-office work.Meet the Team!The Riverside County Fire Department is one of California’s largest integrated, cooperative, regional fire protection organizations. The Department has five core values: Leadership, Competence, Integrity, Safety, and Customer Service.Key Responsibilities:Determine hardware and operating system resource requirements.Plan and implement hardware installation and upgrades; maintain physical technical infrastructure, directories, and system documentation; plan and implement operating system and application upgrades.Monitor resource use, and tailor and tune to ensure optimal performance and reliability.Conduct analysis of network and system management, capacity planning, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery.Develop utility programs and shell scripts (e.g., backup, security); evaluate software; assist with application testing.Develop system security and firewall requirements based on industry standards and management preferences; plan and implement systems backups, coordinating recoveries, including offsite disaster recovery.Research, evaluate, and test proposed products, product versions, and systems solutions; coordinate design, installation, and support activities with application vendors.Evaluate conformance of system security and database integration requirements with County standards.Education:
Completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units from an accredited college or university, preferably with coursework in computer science, computer information systems, data processing, information management, or a related field to the assignment. (Additional qualifying IT job-related experience may substitute for the required education on the basis of 30 semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of full-time experience.)Experience:
Four years of successful journey level IT system analysis related experience, one year of which included either lead level duties or technically advanced IT job-related work. (One year as an IT Systems Administrator II will satisfy the one year of lead or technically advanced experience requirement.)Knowledge of:
The principles, methods, and techniques used in the course of work for the IT Systems Administrator series; principles and techniques applied to IT devices, applications, and systems; principles of organization and administration; principles of documentation and recordkeeping, storage and retrieval is preferred for higher-level classes.Ability to:
Gather and analyze data, reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; resolve technical problems and innovate more efficient use of IT resources; perform systems analysis work and problem solving; interpret and follow written and oral instructions; prepare concise reports and documents; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, customers, other employees, and the public; communicate effectively with people at all organizational levels.Required IT-Related Skills:
Support of mainframe, stand-alone or single platform computer environment; use of OS software; use of system management software; use of backup and recovery utilities.Preferred IT-Related Skills:
