Un
der the direct supervision of the Security Supervisor and Nursing Director, this position is responsible for protecting patients, visitors, employees, and hospital property by rounding in assigned areas, engaging patients, and promoting a safe and therapeutic environment while enforcing hospital policies at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.Provide surveillance of Behavior Health UnitsWork in collaboration with departmental staff (RNs, Behavioral Health Consultants, Unit Clerks, Psychiatric Nursing Assistants, etc.) to protect patients, visitors, and employeesProvide a presence in the inpatient psychiatry clinicsRespond to and assist in controlling combative patientsAssist in re-direction and de-escalation of patient situations. Work to prevent aggressive behaviorIntervene in patient, visitor and/or staff confrontations as appropriate using least restrictive methodsFollow standard precautions using personal protective equipment (PPE) as requiredProvide effective oral and written communicationExhibit a professional image and demeanor. Utilize interpersonal skills and customer service abilities to create a positive environment for patients, visitors, and staffDeter vandalism, theft, and abuse through routine patrolsSupport and enforce all security policies and proceduresComplete appropriate documentation of various incidentsPerform security checks, patrol facility, and monitor special assignmentsConduct incident investigations and provide documentation for follow-upReport and follow-up on all safety and fire hazardsRespond to lock/unlock doors, respond to entrapments or elevator issues, and assist in traffic/parking enforcementRespond to and resolve emergencies such as fire, HazMat, security alarms and patient/visitor/staff assistsMaintain a working knowledge of computers to process data, operate fire alarm systems, and security systemsComplete mandatory education and training to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. One year of post-high school education related to security and safety and one year of experience in security and safety; orTwo years of post-high school education related to security and safety.
Possession of appropriate driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.Ability to obtain basic certification from International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 6 months of hire and maintain certification for duration of employmentE xperience working with Behavioral Health patientsExperience using EpicStrong interpersonal skillsAbility to communicate and redirect negative behavior in a courteous and direct mannerExperience as a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant, Hospital Support Person, or in a like positionDesirable Certifications:These will be required in the training process for this positionHealth Safety Professional (HSP) - to be completed in first 90 daysCrisis Prevention Institute Instructor certifiedManagement of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) certifiedCrisis Intervention Training (CIT)Safety Care TrainingSatisfactory completion of the established Psychiatric Nursing Assistant Training Program or an equivalent program.Application Process:To be considered, applicants must upload
