Summary
Assists the Superintendent and coordinates the daily activities, management and operations of the City's Water Works; makes certain all state and federal guidelines are met to assure that safe and potable water is provided to the citizens.
Job Duties
Coordinates the work of all operators either through written instructions or personal contact; passes on all information regarding operations from the Superintendent to the operators.
Assigns daily work to operators and maintenance personnel; checks on the progress of treatment of raw water and maintenance of equipment; assures all water released into the system is clean and potable and the equipment is in good working order; insures plant grounds are kept clean.
Inspects all forms submitted by plant operators such as daily work sheets and the following reports: flocculator, sludge, pump and motor, chlorine weight, chemical weight, chemical feed, and filter backwash, to ensure compliance with regulations on the quality of finished water.
Assists the operators in the daily operation of the plant; responds to emergencies such as pump failures, equipment breakdown, turbid water conditions, and malfunctions of rate controllers, chlorinators, and feeding equipment.
Conducts performance evaluations on selected staff; trains personnel to attain their Class III License; reviews time sheets and operator schedules at the request of the superintendent.
Inspects and calibrates equipment; assures that routine and emergency maintenance and repairs are completed according to schedules.
Informs Superintendent of all chemical needs for the plant and laboratory.
Orders and obtains supplies to keep the plant clean and operational.
Attends safety meetings to update plant operations and new safety precautions.
Presents programs and conducts tours to establish good public relations.
Performs other related duties as required.
Employee subject to recall to duty in cases of emergency.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field.
Four years experience in water treatment of which at least one year was in a supervisory capacity.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
Licenses and Certifications:
Class I Georgia Water Treatment Certification.
Must possess a valid Class C Georgia driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the practices, principles, and supervisory techniques associated with water treatment plants.
Knowledge of the chemistry, characteristics, and treatment techniques of water.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures and the processes involved in processing raw water into potable water.
Knowledge of State and Federal regulations regarding water treatment and purification.
Knowledge of the policies and practices of the Water Department.
Knowledge of Water Works operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic operations and repairs.
Ability to train personnel in various plant positions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinate staff members.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. as of 12/4/01.
