The City of Virginia Beach's Planning Department is seeking a Plans Examiner I/II. The position works in the Permits and Inspection Division, which administers the Uniform Statewide Building Code and associated laws and ordinances of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Virginia Beach. This posting may be filled as Plans Examiner I or Plans Examiner II depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant. The associated pay grades are as follows:
Plans Examiner I G.24: $52,703.70 - $81,690.74
Plans Examiner II G.25: $55,338.90 - $85,775.30
Duties of a Plans Examiner I include:
Examine residential construction plans, minor commercial construction plans and/or site drawings and specifications to verify compliance with all applicable federal, state and local codes; and note discrepancies and inform the architect, engineer, or developer in writing, listing the discrepancies and the applicable code sections.Review architectural/structural/site plans and provide information to contractors, engineers, architects and homeowners at the counter or through electronic means as to any requirements prior to issuance of the applicable permit. Update plans review letters and reflect changes.Calculate building and/or impervious surface square footage as well as permit fees; and issue building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical along with associated civil permits. Verifying the address and zoning on site plan. Process invoices for payment of applicable fees, i.e. public utilities, bonds, etc., ensure that contractor registration are current.File plans and maintain log of plan status; purge files of duplicate and/or outdates plans specifications.Receive calls and meet with architects, engineers, or contractors in the office to review preliminary plans for compliance with codes and discuss City policies and review processes.Assist field inspectors by supplying code related information or solving field problems.Attend departmental meetings as a representative to provide input relating to building codes and site developments.Attend ICC and State sponsored seminars in order to stay current with code changes. Maintain CEU's as required by mandated certifications.Attend court to give testimony in cases where there are building code and/or site development questions to be answered.Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.Additional duties of a Plans Examiner II include:
All of the above duties listed.Review mostly commercial plans to verify compliance with all applicable federal, state and local codes; note discrepancies and inform the architect, engineer, or developer in writing, listing the discrepancies and the applicable code sections.Attend building code meetings as departmental representative providing input from our City while staying abreast of developments in other cities concerning building codes.Assist with residential code interpretation for Plans Examiner I's.Meet with architects, engineers, or contractors to review preliminary plans for compliance with codes and discuss City policies and review processes.
